License Plate craziness (Personalized old plates)

I want to get a personalized plate, but I want it to be Black/Yellow or Blue/Yellow like they were originally. Does someone or does DMV produce these w/ the letters you want? I was thinking of just painting new plates, but then the CALIFORNIA would disappear because it's not "raised" any more. Ideas?

You have to get the plates they issue. Then go to Pomona and have them made in whatever you want. The won't be perfect and they won't be legal. But, you could put your stickers on it and try it. If you are using your dad's old name, that might fly if you can prove he had it and convince the cops, et al, that you just had it refurbished. They do that too. But chances are slim since your car hasn't benn registered to you all these years coming with a blue plate.

I still have a blue plate that says ZEKE. It the real deal. I'm thinking of reclaiming the name and using it. Then using the old plate. Once again, the plate came off an '81, so they will know right away that I haven't had it in continuous service. And I don't have 2 of them. I guess I could get the 2nd made at Pomona.

I found a few people who will make the plates mail order. Here's one.

Also look up GR8PL8S or "The Mad Greek."

Scott, the goal is to get the car! Then, even California DMV couldn't argue with you about placing the "original" plate on it, could they?
