I have a good friend who spends several months a year there strictly for the fishing...bone fish in particular. This guy could afford to go anywhere to fish yet he always goes back to Belize.

Spent a week in Belize, but this was back in'73. Beautiful place, great diving & fishing. At that time another guy & I were traveling through by Land Cruiser from Mexico (Chetumal) to Guatemala (Tikal). We learned that the people there didn't have much use for whites. In Belize City, we had to go to the fourth hotel before we found one that would give us a room among other things. It was an interesting and educating experience. I imagine things may have changed since, especially if you are going a little upscale.

My wife and I did our honeymoon in Belize in 2000. It was awesome.
We stayed on Caye Caulker. We spent a couple of days just hanging out fishing on the dock using only a line, hook and bait purchased at the local store. We gave any fish we caught to locals who were literally there to catch their dinner. The hotel room was something like $20 per night, and the fishing was free. Caye Caulker is definitely more rustic than the big island but we were up for an adventure. Belize city is a big, dirty 3rd-world dump. All of the people we met in Belize were genuinely wonderful, but I'd recommend not spending too many of your precious vacation days in the city because there just isn't much to do there. The trip to Tikal Guatemala was also incredible. The border crossing was a bit scarry (lots of shady characters trying to "change our money") but one we got to Florence, it was really beautiful. The massive ruins in the jungle with "tucan" birds flying around and monkeys everywhere was quite an experience, if you like the archeological kind of thing. Have a great time.

Yes,
Spent about 10 days there a couple of years ago. Stayed on Ambergris Caye (pronounced key). No need to see the cities - the resort areas are very small and not built up like the mexican hot spots. Very quiet and peaceful. No cars allowed on Ambergris - just golf carts and bikes. Very expensive for 3rd world - similar to Hawaii pricing. Government Beer costing near the $4/bottle range. If you can swing it - head on down to the isle of Roatan Honduras. Very inexpensive with West Bay Beach being one of the nicest white sand beaches I have seen. Beers will run you about $.65 - delivered to your door by the local beer truck. Have fun.

look out for kidnappers. if they visit pelican at all they are aware of your recent mods, and the value of them. i would leave the stethoscope and white lab coat at home too, as they will not recognize you are a doctor.

Used to fly down there years ago. Nice place but can be expensive. Take the phone number to the US Embassy "just in case" and photocopy your passport.
Buy some lomotil at the local drugstore and do not drink the water (beer is just fine) and remember that the ice there has the same critters in it that make you sick. Have fun and use a "raincoat" if needed... ![]() JoeA
