I had to take 8 semesters of PE and a semester of health to graduate--no waivers for anyone. That being said, high school counselors are clueless, graduation requirements could have changed (happened to me), and school administrators like to throw their weight around.

When i moved to the US i was 15 and had just completed the first quarter of 9th grade in Singapore. The local High school i went to had me "skip" to 11th grade for 2 months taking a bunch of AP classes going over stuff i covered in the 8th grade in Singapore.

My 12th grade was spent taking Late Arrival, PE, US History, US Gov't, PE again, DECA, Early Dismissal so i could fufill the school's requirements for graduation.

Total waste of a year. But it was a pretty good time :)

Why 4 years of English and 3 of History, but only 2 of Math and 1 of Science?

Band geek here. One year, at band camp.........
Considered music as a major for a short time. Do you know what a professional Trombone player says when he gets to work?

I have to disagree with your rag on English requirements. Nobody reads anything, much less writes anything these days. You pack up a student with loads of technical and theoretical skills and no way to communicate any of it and you've just created another green-card carrying imported engineer. Fantastic :)

We're seeing a shortfall of engineers and scientists coming out of America though, so maybe we need to ratchet the req's up a bit. Maybe 4 years of both English and Sciences is the way to go.

I'm another trombone band-geek: 4 years of camps, some of the best groups in the country, ensembles, multiple styles, solos, etc etc. Also considered performance major but decided that playing horn 9 hours a day to be able to buy food wasn't a good way to live. However, if you can maintain your training on a day to day basis, in 20 years you'll be good enough to get a seat in a major symphony and then you can charge $100/hr for your services.... but it takes 20 years, minimum.

Perhaps she should demand a voucher to attend a high school that doesn't require P.E. as a determining factor for graduation?

Interesting article on why you've never met (and probably won't meet) an illiterate jew.

(Jewish myself)

Have you ever heard Adam Corolla play "Asian or Jew" on Love-Line?

Caller: "I have this problem... Im pregnant with my Moms boyfriends baby..."

Adam: "Asian or Jew?"

Caller: "Uh.. Im white"

Adam: "Dammit, Im wrong every time..."
