Ok, this is dumb...

A kid takes AP biology instead of PE and doesn't get her diploma.

I'm sure she had plenty of time to take the class. I seriously doubt every class she took was as important as AP Biology, and would have finished it if she'd actually taken the time to examine her schedule and plan ahead. There must be much more to this story than what's presented here.

Well, she failed to drop electives (band, choir) to take a required class to fulfill the requirements for graduation. I doubt band and choir really REALLY contributed much to her education...

Fray - actually, music education has been proven to contribute to increased itellectual capacity, improve problem solving and obtain improved focus. Given an opportunity to hire someone - I would take the band jock all things being somewhat equal.

No offense ot any Hebrew brothers, but I have yet to meet a poor, stupid Jew and I have yet to meet a real musician who wasted my time becuase of apathy or ignorance (conceit and insecurity aside).

As my college counselor was fond of saying about such matters: "A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part."

I'm with wludavid...if she's smart enough to take AP classes she should be smart enough to plan her classes so she has the required combination to graduate.

She holds varsity letters in three sports. She is not dodging PE. The inflexibility and utter stupidity of the school administration are colossal. This should never have been an issue.

Yeah, my HS didn't let me graduate early because my name started with a letter in the wrong part of the alphabet. .. must take req'd "Health" the second semester.

Then came, 'must take at least two classes to be enrolled." grrreat -- they do it for the children.

She should beg her schools principal to reconsider; "Please Mr. Numbnuts, if I don't graduate on time, my academic career could get derailed and I might end up being an abject failure...like you!"

PE is required in most if not all school systems, and normal taken in the freshman year. Certainly the girl and her parents bear the responsibility for fitting a single class into a 4 year span?? Sounds like a dodge to me.

Doesn't sound like that big of a deal since she plans to get the GED and continue on her path, the story hardly seems worthy of print.

On a different note, when did PE not become a requirement every day in high school?

I don't think I ever took PE in high school. If you played sports, the PE requirement was waived.

Yes, I know... I'm a smart cookie, and I was a band geek all through highschool.

The problem with it is, it is not really music education. I learned how to play an instrument, and make music with a group, but I really didn't learn much at all about music theory. It really showed when I started playing guitar.

She's smarter than we all gave her credit for at least - she's getting her GED and giving the admin the finger.

Surprising - here in our part of Texas (DFW), the music education is very good if not excellent. Goes beyound just remebering your line.

PE was required for all four years of high school for everyone, unless you were disabled. 40 minutes of PE then ten minutes to shower and get back in school clothes.

Now my kids only had to do one semester. No wonder I can do more pull ups than my son or his friends and do an L on the floor. When did this all change? I missed something here.

Yeah, we didn't learn jack about theory. I was pretty disappointed after I graduated and really got into playing guitar. There were music theory classes at my highschool, but they were a separate class.

At my school, it is required to take 2 years (a total of 4 semesters) of P.E.. During Freshman year, you spend 1 quarter (half a semester) studying Health, but Health still counts as a requirement listed under P.E.
I find it hard to understand why the girl didn't take P.E. when supposed to during Freshman and Sophomore year. I would have thought that if she skipped a year of this class, the counselers would have bugged the heck out of her and made her take the class.

This doesn't surprise me. When I was in high school I asked the counselor to help me choose a complete set of English classes geared towards getting me prepared for college. She recommended a series of English classes that I signed up for and then I found out 3 weeks in that my graduation requirements would not be met by the classes she helped me pick. I raised a stink and they swapped my classes so I had the right mix, but boy was I mad.

I don't fully understand the requirements anyway.
Why 4 years of English and 3 of History, but only 2 of Math and 1 of Science?

Band geek here. One year, at band camp.........
Considered music as a major for a short time. Do you know what a professional Trombone player says when he gets to work?

"You want fries with that?"

No sympathy here for her, it's a requirement, she chose to ignore the requirement and now she has to deal with the concequences.

IMHO it's more of america's "not my fault" attitude.
