Thought I would pass this along:
FRANKFURT, Germany - In Germany, where a good beer is not just quaffed but cherished, the price of doing so at Munich's annual Oktoberfest is on the rise — again. Organizers of the annual event said Friday that the average price for a liter of beer inside the famed tents will break through the euro7 (US$8.84) barrier for the first time this year, rising to euro7.06 (US$8.92). After surveying two dozen groups selling beer at the event in Munich this year, organizers found that they planned to charge between euro6.80 (US$8.59) and euro7.25 (US$9.16). That's about 15 euro cents (19 U.S. cents) more than last year. Beer isn't the only thing that's becoming more expensive. A liter of mineral water will cost, on average, about euro5.62 (US$7.10), a 7 euro cent (9 U.S. cent) increase. Soft drinks, including the popular cola-orange mix Spezi, will run at about euro6.59 (US$8.33), about 14 euro cents (18 U.S. cents) more. This year's Oktoberfest, the 172nd, runs from Sept. 17 to Oct. 3.

I've only been once and it is seriously overrated. Expensive, disorganised, tacky and hardly any 'real' german atmosphere. On the same trip I went to the 'Weisses Brauhaus' in the centre of Munich and that really is the real thing.

I went the opening Saturday in 2000 and it was an absolute blast! If I remember correctly, I think the liters were about $7.50 US equiv.
The only grumble that I had was that due to the huge crowds, it was difficult to get a beer in a timely manner. The kegs had been tapped for over an hour before we got our first one and than it was about once an hour when the beerfrau would come by to take orders. Learned real quick, order 2 at the same time! Drank 7 liters in 5 hours and somehow remembered to tell the taxi driver where our hotel was. Ralph |
