Bryan's Geology Homework : Chile & Paraguay
Do we have any geologist types or rock climbers here in PPOT? For my Geology final, I have to write a 2500 word paper on the geology of a place of my choosing. The theme is that of a tour group, so I'm organizing a tour of Chile and Paraguay. Along the way, we have to visit a distinct coastal feature, freshwater feature, and a volcano of some kind.
My tour's theme will be mountain climbing and camping. Basically... land in Santiago, drive to a mountain, climb, camp for the night, go to another mountain, climb, etc.. Anyone have any favorite climbs or geological attractions down that way? How about an awesome coastal feature I could write a few pages on? Thanks ![]()

Why Paraguay. I haven't been down there, but doesn't Chile have the three features you are looking for. Plus, don't they have one of the Earth's driest deserts on a coastal region? That may be a really interesting feature to include.

Well, it may not be necessary for me to include Paraguay at all, but from the descriptions of everyone else's projects, they were taking like, all of Asia, for example. Chile has everything, and it would make for a very realistic trip, so maybe I should just go with that.
Good call on the Atacama Desert. I should be able to get at least a page out of that, and since the tour is likely to fly over the desert to get to some of the northern mountains, it will have a good tie in.

I'm a geologist..but never been to Chile. I had a professor who use to do summer field work in Chile I believe, but that won't help you any. Bring me back a fossil
![]() Man! You get Chile...and I got the...Utah...but at least it was Park City ... if I had to be in Utah ![]() |

Don't they also have those huge rock figures in the Chilean desert (reminded me when you mentioned flying over it)? That would also be interesting, and you could bring one back for Souk.

I'm told you can buy "rocks" from places like Colombia, Bolivia and Peru. But I'm told they're quite expensive. Something like a thousand dollars an ounce. Pure white "rock." I guess they must be very beautiful.

Supe, do you have any more info on those rocks? That sounds interesting, but I can't find anything about them. My guess is that they're quartz or marble, but I can't find anything.
