how to transfer video to a laptop?

I have some video clips which I would like to transfer to my laptop, but the camera is "ancient". I think it's Hi8, definitely not digital. It only has standard rca outputs, (yellow, red, white) which normally get plugged into the tv for viewing etc. Is there a pc video card for laptops that would accept those plugs to transfer the video?

thanks

You may have s-video on the laptop - it looks like a PS/2 mouse port but it is typically yellow. Failing that, you'll need a capture card (don't think they make USB ones) to do it. ALso, check locally - some places will convert old 16mm film or whatever to DVD for a small fee.

You can definetly do that with a laptop. This is easiest if the laptop has USB 2.0. If so, your cheapest option is probably something like this. I haven't used it, but it looks like it should get the job done. There should also be options out there for the older/slower USB, and for PCMCIA (though these will be more expensive).

The big chains (Fry's, Best Buy, CompUSA) may be able to help you. Online, Newegg (where I linked to above) is great, and the customer reviews on their products may help you out.

We need to see those videos!

If you want one bundled with decent editing software, try Pinnacle Studio Deluxe. Bonus points since Porsche designed the breakout box:

I have a Pinacle TV capture card, & have been happy with it.

Some of the newer mini DV camcorders have analog inputs and can be used as a Analog/DV converter. Then you can capture the video using the Firewire port of a laptop.
