Doh! Made an email blooper....

One of my staff took a new job, so it fell to me to send out an announcement to the whole organization. Proofread it three times, spellchecked, proofread it again.

The spellchecker changed his name from Marc to March! I must have glossed over the misspelling all four times (as well as pushing the wrong button, obviously).

I hate that sinking feeling you get when you make a mistake that is not all that significant in the scheme of things, but is just...dumb.

Nothing promotes deep thought like clicking "Send"...

Or maybe "Submit Post"

A rather large company I worked for years ago had the policy of only hiring 4 year degreed U of F graduates. An exception was made when hiring me as I mearly have a HS diploma. It was pretty clear I was looked down upon by others due to my lack of education. I did my job better than most of the graduates and made sure I was one up on them so they would have no reason to put me down.

Then I made a HUGE error. I was reading aloud to some co-workers, an impressive well written article by another employee in the company newsletter. When I came upon the word epitome I read it wrong. I did not pronounce it correctly. I pronounced it epi-tome not e-pit-o-me. As soon as I read it I realized what I had done. I NEVER lived it down. It was sort of the call word for me after that.

I feel for you. Make sure you say hello to March for me. ;)

Jim,

I use the word epitome in conversation as appropriate but have never written in down. As I read your post I mentally pronounced it the same way you did. I guess we is both stupid. (I have publically butchered hyperbole and thought that centrifugal force was different from that word pronounced "centrifical.)

COLDBASS 06-02-2005 09:29 PM

Oh, man. I got hammered on that one in college...I had just finished a science/chemistry class...

centrifuge - centrifugal...nothing like knowing that you just Fuched up as the last syllable leaves your mouth....

Yeah, but Fuchs is actually pronounced like "Fooks"

Say Books, then replace the B with an F
