I wonder if any of this stuff ever shows up on a Carfax report.:)

Hmmmm, would picture #3 be "Pheasant under Glass" ?

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist that one. :(

You don't have to be going too fast for that to happen... I've seen it dozens of times with farmers' trucks out here.

Yeah, but the angle of attack on a truck is more aggressive than a boxster.

I hit a quail in my VW bus the other day; poor little bastard was running across the road and didn't rotate until the last second... too little, too late... RIP

i sledgehammered a windshield once. and i didnt get through the glass. is this for real?

Moses 06-16-2005 01:29 PM

Pheasants hate german cars. Known fact.

Last we were in phesant country, Glen narrowly missed a rooster while driving in the low triple digits. That would have been an UGLY bird strike indeed.

I was on a Canadair a few years back that hit a goose at 400 kt. +/- at about 10,000 agl. You could hear the strike throughout the plane. It left a BIG dent just above the windscreen and covered all the glass in red. I'm sure they had to make a quick call for IFR clearance if they didn't already have one. The cockpit crew was kind of giddy when we got to the gate. I'm sure they had to stop for a change of shorts.

Question:
What was the last thing that went through that pheasant's mind?

His butt.

I am surprised that the bird actually made it so far through the windshield. I thought the plastic inside of the safety glass is supposed to prevent such things from occurring. I suppose with just the right angles and points of impact, it will happen.

What a mess.

What license plate is the Boxster running? Sheesh...what a mess!
A Pheasant isn't a small bird, so I'm saying not really all that much speed would be needed. Must have given the driver a hell of a fright.

Pheasants have got to be the dumbest birds in existance. Most birds would actually try to avoid getting hit by a car, not a pheasant... We were actually hit by a pheasant in a mini van I used to have a few years back, the dumb bird ran into the left rear of the moving van.

What a bloody mess to have to clean. Yuck!!

Things that have hit me..

a cat
a dog
a traffic light panel box off the back of a Cal Trans truck
a shovel
vomit
paintballs

as for things I've hit... another story

Z-man 06-16-2005 06:47 PM

Things that have hit me:

- rabbit.
- birds
- deer.

The deer hit the driver's door and his face landed on the windshield. Fortunately for me, I didn't notice him bounding across the freeway - otherwise I would have slowed down, and he would have gotten infront of the car, and eventually through the windshield.

Scary stuff.

Birds are actually tougher than they look, especially when you hit them at speed. I was coming down the North Cascades Highway on the Harley one day and caught a crow in the right knee/shin at about 70-75 mph. He was trying to pry up that last nibble of dried out road kill and miss-judged my speed. Take it from me; that smarts. My entire lower leg turned pretty colors and my ankle swelled up to twice its normal size.

did that in a mini cooper s while test driving it. sales droid was in the car with me so no grief when I go tback to the dealer. Made a mess of both of our clothes.

I hit this cat a few years ago at about 90 while running late for work. It was a hard hit but I continued on to work. I did not have any idea that the cat was still in my grill. On the way home that day, which included a stop for gas at a busy gas station, I got some funny looks from people (imagine that!). Well when I got home I finally walked in front of the car and noticed this freeloader hanging from the grill!

The cat was frozen solid and really wedged tight. My wife actually had to help my daughter pull on the rope as I gently pried on the grill (attempting to minimize the damage) as we tried to extricate this little booger.

Tim, the looks on their faces are classic. I hit a bird in my sister in law's car going about 110 on an empty highway, she had just gotten a new car and wanted to see how fast it could go. Yeah, I know, brilliant idea. Damn thing flew out of the ditch straight into the windshield. It was a big bird, how it didn't break anything I'll never know. Left a nice splatter of poo and guts on the windshield, as well as a red and white racing stripe over the top of her new Sable. Luckily we were just able to hose it off in a car wash, never had to explain that one to the father in law.

Can you imagine having to clean that mess out of your new Boxster?
