open letter to the 911 tech forum mods...

the 911 technical forum seems to have become more and more diluted from its named purpose in the last year. i find it increasingly difficult to weed through the off-topic discussions to find new and interesting technical topics to discuss. let's get the forum back on track, shall we?

Rot 911 06-20-2005 10:47 AM

oh this should get interesting.

porcupine911 06-20-2005 11:09 AM

that's what i'm hoping!

kach22i 06-20-2005 11:10 AM

Perhaps some specific samples would help illustrate your point. Please provide real or made-up examples.

I did a search for the word "crash" in the O.T. section recently. Little did I know that the Carrera GT that took two peoples lives on the track was already a strong thread in the 911 techinical forum.

No one objected, special circumstances and all.

porcupine911 06-20-2005 11:17 AM

i'd say there are 7 or 8 off-topic posts in the 30 most recent.

juanbenae 06-20-2005 11:21 AM

the search function is where i go 1st to get an answer to any question i have.

it has evolved in the 3+ years i have been here for the better or worse, i can't say. what exactly are you looking for? an example as stated above might help.

the way i sum it up is its free (thank you PP), and weeding through some poop to find what you need is half the fun. relax and treat it like the newspaper, ignore what you dont want to read. or stay away for a couple weeks and you will enjoy it again.

kach22i 06-20-2005 11:24 AM

Assuming you can judge a book by its cover, or a thread by it's title. The first page:

How to tell a Pelicanite??

Guilted out of buying my first Porsche...

Note to Bernie Ecclestone: buy Hoosiers

It's a Baby Fuch....Noooo, it's a cool paperweight!

R Gruppe, S registry and outlaws - look here!

Andretti's DP 935 for sale

I don't know about "Frog Eyes" or "Ruf'n it" without opening them.

porcupine911 06-20-2005 11:28 AM

thanks for the above examples.

i'm not interested in discussing searches or their usefulness. this topic is about the subject matter of posts in that forum. i like to browse the new topics to see if i can learn anything new of a technical nature.

porcupine911 06-20-2005 11:31 AM

20% is a high scrap rate in my opinion.

Neilk 06-20-2005 12:04 PM

You get what you pay for.

Think about it this way though, 80% is potentially relevant.

porcupine911 06-20-2005 12:11 PM

well i know i'm not the only one out here who would rather see more real technical content. off topic threads in the tech forum just make it more difficult for the grady clays and the john walkers out there to find threads to chime in on.

no offense to those technical experts who i didn't name.

they say opinions are like belly buttons and i forget what else, but eveybody's got one.

masraum 06-20-2005 12:45 PM

This exact gripe has come up many times in the last 4 or 5 years that I've been on the board. It always gets shot down because frankly, the majority of the people like the board the way it is.

BTW What tires are best, and what is the biggest that I can fit under my fenders on 7" wheels?? ;)

I agree, porc. Harder to wade through than ever. Still fun, but diluted is a good word to describe it, IMHO.

Those are the two that popped up on my first search, but I've seen more than that.

Oh, and what's better, synth or dino oil, which brand should I use and what weight?

:D

Milu 06-20-2005 01:17 PM

As this thread relates to the tech board shouldn't it be there instead of cluttering up OT?

Mods!!!!!! can you move this thread?;)

nostatic 06-20-2005 04:32 PM

no, I think I'll just ban him for having the audacity to talk tech here in OT...
