Ferrari's don't sound good
Ok, I know most will probably disagree with me here but I spent a little time at a track close to a friends house on the weekend and to my initial excitement it seemed the ferrari/maser club were on the track for the day. So I stood next to the side barrier at the end of the straight waiting for that 'magical' sound of a ferrari engine on song that everyone raves about.
Well, imagine my disappointment when they all zipped past & sounded all zing and no nuts. I know it's not a great technical description but think more superbike & less car. The best sounding car was a tricked up M3. I'd previously worked at a mortorshow opposite the ferrari stand and one of the salespeople started one up and gave it a bit - which was very impressive in that atmosphere. But out on a track, compared to other cars they just seemed a little lacking. I left the track thinking I'd never again lust after a ferrari - much prefer the more guttural sound of a flat or inline six. Am I nuts or do others else feel the same way.

Gotta disagree. Did the GP rally a few years ago and there was a couple, including an F40, in the event. Listening to a couple of the little 430s winding up in 2nd and 3rd across the top of the hill at the DECA track made all the hair on the back of the neck stand up. It fair wailed like a road going F1. Magic.
Mighta had trick exhausts.

Who knows - maybe the ones I heard weren't giving it hard. Got to add that the majority of steerers were only in factory seats without 5pointers. So maybe they weren't all that serious about chucking the machinery around a track. Wish I'd asked them which club they were with now.
If anyone is willing to lend me one for a week I'll get back to the board with a definitive answer - maybe it's different from the driver's seat. What's the GP rally involve?

I think even a 1981 Ferrari 308 GTSi sounds pretty good, and less motorcycle-like than my 2.7L 911.
I like them both. ![]()

Buy them, sell them

My neighbour over the road - his son - has both a 360 F1 Spyder and a 360 Challenge Stradale (I know!) and they both sound awesome. I checked them both out carefully when he comes to visit his folks. The CS is literally a race-car and is deafeningly loud when he stomps it.
Another neighbour (a few streets away) has a 355F1 Spyder. I once drag-raced him away from the lights for laughs in my old 928 and the sound that Ferrari made was just incredible... hair on the back of your neck stuff!

These pups sound incredible. The F40s left a bit to be desired on the track....way too civilized.

My Neighbor who lives behind me has 2 newer Ferraris.... they both sound like ****t.
He also has an 88 Diamond Blue 911 Coupe. The stupid guy leaves the 911 outside uncovered and never drives it. The Ferraris get the garage and go out on weekend runs. They both sound like ****t and the 911 sounds really cool. |
