This little Prikc screwed millions with his little hobby. What does he get? A suspended jail sentence and 30 hours community service at an elderly home.
That should discourage others.

"VERDEN, Germany - The teenager who created the Sasser worm that snarled tens of thousands of computers last year was convicted Friday on charges including computer sabotage and given a suspended sentence, a court official said.


Sven Jaschan, 19, was found guilty of computer sabotage and illegally altering data, said Katharina Kruetzfeld, a spokeswoman for the court in the northwestern town of Verden. He was given a suspended sentence of one year and nine months.

Jaschan also must perform 30 hours of community service at a hospital or home for the elderly, but will not have to pay court costs.

Jaschan admitted to creating the worm at the beginning of his trial Tuesday — reiterating a confession to authorities at the time of his arrest in May 2004.........."

Unfortunately, you're probably right. Aside from a lengthy prison sentence they should ban him from working in IT for life.

For a non-violent criminal you guys are really frothing at the mouth for jailtime for this guy. I'm kinda surprised.

The penalty should fit the damage inflicted on society. What's the total damage of a rape? a murder? a few grams of crack sold on a streetcorner? How does that cost compare to tens or hundreds of millions of dollars of damage caused by a worm?

Edit: Also, one of the main purposes of jail is as a deterrent. Confined living with scary low-lifes and enduring the occasional rectal renovation is a far more effective deterrent for snot-nosed teenage hackers (or upper middle class businessmen contemplating fraud) than it is for rapists, murderers and drug dealers.

Perhaps a Pelican sponsored lynching then? Or bunch of guys turn up at his place, dismantle his car, computer and other equipment down to the last nut and bolt and keep doing it until he gets the point.
But maybe the best would be for him to have to be employed constantly having to remove worms and viruses from computers - for the rest of his life.

No, I made the point very accurately.

An internet worm causes orders of magnitude more quantifiable damage to the world than one man killing another man.

My wife and mother are both well educated and therefore would understand perfectly. As would Bill Gates, assuming he was still alive at the time. What Michael Jordan does in his spare time is none of my business.

Remember, the organ banks were used for speeders too!

Most of these guys usually end up in IT security. Idea of: make the best criminals into the police so they can guard against the other criminals. (not an endorsement)

Of course, if you were a gift from earth you'd be little hearts & livers.

No doubt the OS monopoly has contributed to the ease of virus dissemination. Nevertheless, look at the supposedly safe cell phone system (it had never been hit - not robust systems). Now there are viruses popping up. Likewise, there were Unix viruses already out there & Linux viruses are starting to be written. Hard to blame Ford for deaths from drunk driving in my book.

Before anyone thinks I like MS - a most definite, no.
