Well, I just crashed it for the first time. Took me about half an hour. No ****. Plugged the iPod in and it went to hell. Will this thing care that I loaded my iPod from a windows machine previously? Oh, a LINUX server is next for me. Thanks Shaun! I think I'll be struggling for a while.

I joined the Mac club today too...I got a new Powerbook for school. 15" screen, 1.5 GHz G4. I like it a lot so far, it detected our wireless network out of the box...no fooling with settings or software.

shuie,

Non-Apple keyboard and mouse I assume?

Get a copy of USB Overdrive, versiontracker.com.

I use a Logitech media mouse on my Macs. $50 but you can configure like 15 different buttons. Scroll whell is cool because it also rocks side to side so you can configure it to handle scrolling left/right in a window or navigating forward/back in a web browser.

I will seriously consider getting a Mac when they switch to Intel processors. I need the ability to switch to WinXP for work, so a dual boot Mac/WinXP would be cool.

Power Book G4. Have used one for the past two years and it is a thing of beauty. I think I derive almost as much pleasure from it as I do from my 911.

no, the sales guy gave me the heads up about that. That would have ruined my evening for sure . Comp USA has a nice package put together aimed specifically at the mini with a new keyboard and mouse, monitor, etc. I was really surprised at the number of gadgets that were available that were specifically designed for this thing. pretty cool . I had to go back today and get a USB hub. Overall im pretty happy with it.

The only thing that really gave me the red ass was wiping out my iPod. I must not have followed the directions correctly because it replaced everything on my iPod with the blank set of songs that were in itunes on the new machine. I just restored them from my old machine which has already been clensed and handed off to the in laws.

That it was a bad idea to use a PC keyboard/mouse?

I actually think for PC users switching to Macs it's a good idea.

The whole idea behind the Mini is for PC users to re-use their existing hardware, keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer etc...

After all, they all work on Macs so that's not an issue. I hope he did not tell you it was.

The only noticeable difference is the modifier key that you use, on a pc it's the CTRL key (CTRL+C =copy) which is the 3rd key away from the spacebar. On a Mac you use the Command Key, has the little Apple/Cloverleaf on it and it's 1st key next to the spacebar.

Whenever I use a PC I have to look to copy/paste cause I'm not used to using the 3rd vs 1st key.

I assume a PC user would have the same issue.

I've used plenty of PC keyboards on Macs, if you want the key in the "normal" spot you just remap the key and that's it.

For quality and feel I've yet been able to find anything that beats the Apple keyboard and mouse. I just wish they would admit that some of us really do need more than a one button mouse and make one themselves. The logitech media mouse is a very close second for feel and comfort and it's got like 15 buttons, gotta love that.

Scott, keyboard feel being entirely subjective, have you ever used a MacAlly IceKey keyboard? The keys are similar to a PowerBook and have a unique scissor mechanism that makes them feel like nothing else. They are crisp and springy. It's also a really slimline design.

Logitec First Mouse (or newer equivalent) works great too.

My $.02.
