Man admits to acid attack on wife Thursday, November 4, 2004 By SHANE HOOVER Repository staff writer (Photo inset) WIFE ATTACK. William Slabaugh (left) admitted in Stark County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday that he intentionally tried to disfigure his wife by spraying her with nitric acid. He appeared with attorney Donald Malarcik Jr. CANTON — A former attorney has admitted trying to disfigure his estranged wife by spraying her with nitric acid. William F. Slabaugh, 68, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Stark County Common Pleas Court to kidnapping and felonious assault charges. “Bill is at the point now where he wants to accept responsibility and express remorse,” defense attorney Donald Malarcik Jr. said. “The best way to do that was for him to plead guilty.” Judge John G. Haas ordered the probation department to gather information about Slabaugh to be used at his sentencing in December. Assistant Stark County Prosecutor Jennifer Dave said Slabaugh faces up to 10 years in prison. Slabaugh had researched the acid before ordering 500 milliliters from an online chemical supply company for $51. His package arrived July 9. The next day he used it to attack his wife, Becky, in the basement of their Lake Township home. She stopped by the house to check on her belongings. The couple was getting a divorce. In a taped interview, Slabaugh told sheriff’s deputies that he wanted to scar his wife, a woman 20 years younger than him. “I just loved her too much,” Slabaugh said. “I didn’t want anyone else to be with her.” The attack left Becky Slabaugh with burns on more than 50 percent of her body. The defense had explored the theory that an antidepressant medication had played a role in the attack. Malarcik said the medication may have influenced Slabaugh in some way, but the doctor who reviewed his case did not feel that the claim was strong enough to be a trial defense. A civil lawsuit related to the attack is pending before a different judge in Common Pleas Court. Becky Slabaugh and her two children are seeking $10 million in damages from William.
