Getting Around Germany For Two Weeks
 

Should I use the rail way? or rent a car??
which do you guys think is better.? As I see it they both have pro's and cons to them.

Rent a car. It's fun to drive there. Nice scenery and polite drivers, as long as you keep to the right. And you can swing by the Nurburgring for a few hot laps in the rental car.

Rental car for sure. The trains won't go where you want, when you want, and you won't be able to put all your stuff in the trunk of the train. ;) It's also not much cheaper to go by train. A 2-week Eurail pass is liable to work out about the same as a 2-week car rental (or at least it did for me, a month ago).

Last time there (with the military) we rented a Golf...what a blast! We all fought over who'd get to drive. Ein lager bitte...

Memorize the following phrase:

"Ich Moechte ein grosse Bier, bitte!"

Cities= rail.

Countryside= car.

Car probably works well for both, though. Rent a small one, with a small engine. Gas is like $6/gallon.

Agree -- car. Try a turbo diesel Golf. They'll easily go 100+ MPH, and are stingy on fuel.

Yeah, do a turbo-diesel. Expand your mind - try a French car ;).

If you have to pay to park in the cities, it gets pretty pricey but I could never do it by train - having the car to keep stuff in, and the flexibility, is awesome.

However, John's got it right - if you are ONLY in cities, use the train. Parking and Euro city driving will kill you (remember, many of the cities are much older than cars and not designed for it).

Went last year with the wife. We got a 4 day Eurail pass. You could go anywhere in Germany but it had to be used in 10-14 days or something like that. Two 1st class tickets for around $500. Frankfurt to Munich. Munich to Neuschwanstein (sp). Munich to Berlin. Finally Berlin to Frankfurt. About 23 hours on trains that run on time, are incredible clean and was drunk off my ass the whole time. I would do it again in a heart beat.

Yup. Turbo diesel Golf. The interesting bits of Germany are the bits that you do not see from a train. And a turbo diesel Golf will surprise you. As P.J. O'Rourke (Ithink it was) once said "the fastest car is a rental car".
