Drum lessons at 35?
So I bought my 7 yr old a drumset for his birthday and he loves it. I was thinking about signing him up for lessons, when I realized I'd like to learn too. Anyone take up an instrument in your adult life?

I have been playing drums for over 30 years. Do it, man!!
Maybe you could get a teacher for both of you. If you don't like it, you can always stop them. Is your son in the band at school? If not, sign him up for next year. That way if he decides it's just a phase, you won't have spent a lot of dough. |
Hey. what do you call a guy that likes to hang out with musicians?
A drummer. :D You've probably passed the point in your life where you can develop the fine motor skills neccessary to be a master (I'll never drive Formula 1 and probably not any big professional race), but you could have a lot of fun and some good bonding time with your young one. I had a set of Congas for a few years that I played periodically before deciding to focus on less hobbies. My brother had a small trap set for a few years that I played (using that term loosely) on occasion. Drumming can be fun and a great stress reliever. Man of a million hobbies and master of none, |
Gassy, I'm 61 and still wearing jeans...trying to learn to play a guitar. Who knows, maybe I'll go on tour some day. Go for it!!!

Call me when you need a 54 year old bass player. Go for it bud!
|
Im a 37 year old guitar player.,.,.,who bought a drum kit this past december so the kids (and I) could learn to play them Its great to watch the 8,6, 3 yr olds playing it. My 8 year old wanted a guitar, so I bought him a Fender mini guitar a month ago. He starts his lessons the end of summer.

I was 26 when I learned bass guitar and have had a blast playing in bands for the last 23 years.

It would one he!! of a large band. We have quite a few musicians on the board. We could lug the gear around in a VW bus with a Porsche engine!
Jack O could be the tour manager! Ohyeah!!!!!! |
JonT, I wasn't asking for opinions on whether or not I should pursue lessons...I was asking for stories of people who have taken up music lessons as adults. :) ......
If we do start a band, I'm thinkin' it should be called BUTZI http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/gitaar.gif I gotta catch up with you guys...back to the skins. |
Cool to bang a lil sump'n out but if you are really serious about being a drummer you have to work about 45min to 1 hour each day working on your chops. Its all about stick control. Remember, it as much wrist as it is your fingers. Keep your pinky finger on the stick at all times.
If you really want to get your chops down, hook up with a drummer who did drum corp or even get an instructional video tape on how to play snare. After you have the stick chops down then and only then should you earn the right to hit the kit! |
Lube ya speak as a drummer with experience. Gimme a Willie "Big Eyes" Smith shuffle and I'll work with ya all night!
