OS X Finder out of sync...?
Has anyone run across this before? I think it may be related to the 10.4.2 update, but I'm not sure. It just started happening, and it's driving me nuts. It appears that my finder is out of sync with the rest of the OS. If I create a folder via terminal, it won't show up in finder, and if I create a folder in finder it doesn't show up in terminal. All existing files/folders are still there, but it's happening with new things.
Has anyone seen this before?! i'm about to just destroy these two machines and start over with 10.4.1 |
This OS X you speak of....it almost sounds like you are describing and operating system of some kind. I googled it and found that indeed there is a small California based company called Apple that makes such a thing. From what I gather, their primary business is making personal music players called 'ipods'. They make computers as well, but these seem to be more of an ipod accessory........
:) |
I noticed that in earlier releases.
Create a folder on the desktop and it does not show up, open a Finder window and it does, go back to desktop and there it is. Annoying. Just installed the latest version via software update. Have not seen it yet but will report if I do. |
HD, yep, our $5k dual proc G5s are just accessories to the $300 iPods :p
It doesn't seem to be happening *as much* on my powerbook, so I moved my crap over here for now. Do you think spotlight's indexing scheme could be interfering? |
$5k for a smp mac? Dubya Tee Eff!
Built my dual AMD rig for $650... runs Debian fine |
The new dual 2.7 G5s are only $3k now. They were 5 when we got ours. $3k is practically a steal :D
|
"$5k dual proc G5s"
5K!?!?!?!? Mr. Jobs laughing all the way to the bank...... |
Price a Dell dual-processor workstation. I just did, spec'd a mid-range one (dual 3.0GHz, 2GB RAM, only 1 HDD, 20" LCD, etc). I get $3,922.
I wouldn't expect Apple to be price-competitive with home-brew or whitebox workstations. All they need to do is not be too much higher than Dell. |
According to some items on slash dot (www.slashdot.com) the early developers that have recived their intel based mac boxes are finding that they are getting better performance than the top of the line dual G5. They are also reporting that the rosetta program (a system to run native PPC programs on the intel processor) is very fast and stable. I think it is very exciting to have another OS that works on Intel processors. (yes, yes, i know Linux is there but my users aren't up to that level.. some have trouble useing a mouse.)
|
that's pretty exciting, saintly. My boss just got one of those intel machines, I'll have to find out what he thinks of it. Since we're java/jsp, this whole deal doesn't affect us like it does the cocoa guys... some of them looked like they were going to cry at first :)

There's an annoying delay in Finder updates in OSX. It's most irritating when you bring a Finder window to the front, where you've just saved a file and 3-4 seconds later, the file appears. If you're looking in 'last modified' list mode, you can inadvertently select the wrong file when the update shifts everything.
Not sure why all versions of OSX so far have slow Finder updates. |
Dude
$ updatedb |

Except your user will get an error about not being able ot access the slocate database. $ su -c "nohup updatedb &" Then enter your root password and exit out of the shell... |
I'll try that real quick... thanks for the tip :)
