The BMW madness unfolds....

I recieved my turbo which is a T3 unit off a ford 2.3 liter and my intercooler which is off a Saab PPG. Now I just need to make a manifold, get 19lb injectors, and a blow off valve and we have BOOOOSSSSSST.

Shooting for 195 hp at the crank at 9-10psi. That should move this little 318i pretty well.

"Make a manifold" - that seems like a pretty big piece of the job.

Which 1.8 liter engine do you have, the m42 or the m44?

More like an E21, right? The '85 318 had the same motor as the old 320I (E12) which dates all the way back to Von Valkenhausen's 1500CC engine for the 1500, right?

That car is going to HONK. Keep us posted.

SoCal,

LOL, I think the guys that had the turbo before me must have been a plumber. I've rebuilt the turbo and bought all new oil/water lines.

wludavid,

To make a turbo mainfold for a M10 all you have to do is flip the existing manifold upside down and cut off the colletor and weld on a t3 flange. I think I can handle that.

john,

The M10 was used in the E21. They are a favorite transplant into 2002's. Your knowledge of cars always amazes me.

I believe the M10 was in the 2002 as well. I don't know why I assumed it was an M42.

I may bug you about plans for the manifold. I have a 320i project car that will need some more power. Ever hear of the $2006 Challenge?

I think m10 is the block and e12/21/etc is the designation for the head. (if I remember correctly)

Yes I have.

I think it could be fun to compete with a BMW. But I doubt if you'd win.

e21/e30/eXX is the chassis code and the m10 is the engine.

BMW lists engines like M10b18 where bXX is the displacment in deciliters.

For example, the latest M3 has an S54B32 because the motorsport engine is the S variation of the M54 that the other 3ers have.

Agreed, and every head has cast into it the chassis code. Although, (and this is where my memory gets really fuzzy), I think I remember that some of the '02's had different codes on the head. Some had e12(I think?, which was the 5 series), some (later models, e.g. '76) e21.... I think there was also 112 or something like that.

It's been too long since I've played with the '02.

AFAIK, the eXX convention wasn't used when the 2002 was released, so there are certainly some weird things as the figured out how they were going to organize things.

The old heads I remember from the junkyards, 121, E12, in a circle, cast into the side of the head.

80x89 . . .

80 * 89 * 89 * 3.1416 / 4 * 4 = 1,991 cc

I know that the E21 320i went from 2.0 liters to 1.8 in 1980, but they still called it the 320? Anyone know the specs of that engine?

I never knew it was called M10. I sold my '75 2002 now eleven years ago, it was a great car.

the k-jetronic 1.8 was rated for 101 hp in the US. Europe got the 2.0L version that was around 125 hp I think.

Is it good or bad that I just typed that without having to look it up?

speaking of 320's, there was an absolute mint on ebay last week... 13k original miles (not sure if that's healthy for the car)
