my IDIOT at work. VENT!

Please allow me to vent. I have the lamest co-worker. Complete idiot, lazy, horrible work ethics, and generally crappy to be around. But he is like a politician, let’s call him Mr. Arse. One other engineer and myself work great together. Mr. Arse estimated this one portion of work to take one week, plus overtime. He sold himself to our boss, that he has done this before multiple times, and could teach us what he knows. When the work started, Mr. Arse calls in sick. So my friend and I proceed with the work, without much experience. We quickly figure it out, and take care of the elaborate measurements in 1.5 days. All the data gets calculated, in another whole day. That’s it, we are done. Along comes Mr. Arse, from his sick days (dehydration). He looks over our work, and it is immediately clear that he has no idea how to do the work, so he cannot check us. Boss man, sees him pondering out work, comes over, AND EXPLAINS THE PROCESS TO HIM! Then the two idiots try to tell us what we did wrong, how we could have done it better, blah blah blah. Every question they had, we answered and explained. Effen bulletproof.

What is pi$$ing me off it that:

Mr. Arse gets all the credit, and is considered the expert. I hear everyday, “check this with Mr. Arse”, “run it by Mr. Arse first”.
He milks overtime, when I effen know that he is always late and leaves early.
My boss, is a typical genius engineer that cannot think outside of any box. Only black and white.
Mr. Arse can play politics and come off squeaky clean.
The dude is an idiot, and cannot do anything.

One time, we had to do some quick and dirty survey work. I was told to work with the idiot. Mr. Arse said, I want to use this rod. I told him no, that is the incorrect rod. But he said, “I have done this a million times, that rod will make it fast”. Ok, so we drive 1 hour to the job site, set up, for another hour, layout points. Genius tells me, “I have more experience, so you hold the rod” “OOOOKKKAY! I look on the plans and find out that a certain portion of the bridge is supposed to be _______meters in the air. I give the idiot the info, and hold up the rod. I schit you not, he stares at the rod through the equipment for around 10 minutes and I can tell from his body language he is confused. He says, “hmmm, something is wrong…with the plans”. I tried to hold the smirk in, and tell him, “well no, this is a metric bridge, with metric plans, you my friend, made us bring an English/standard rod”

I am gonna secretly undermine this basteage. We already are enemies because I caught him logging in 50 hours of OT every month, even for Sundays that nobody worked. Stupid crook.

This kind of thing is very much why I left my last job.

Thhe dude was an competent engineer in some respects though so his work was good enough but not any better than anyone elses and it surely didn't stand out from mine.

The kicker was - they made him the Sr. and that's why I left.

In this job the Sr. is a mentor and resource to Jr engineers more than anything else. It should be someone who is experienced and able to impart that experience to those jr engineers. These were my bosses words at the time of my review a few months before I left and right before HIS promotion.

He told me in my review that *I* was the guy everyone thanked when they had finished a project. *I* was the guy everyone came to at the start of projects, not just from our team but from all teams in our Data Center.

"Well, what's Mike think about it." That was the question; when there was a problem or an issue - I would get the call before anyone else. Yet they promote the guy who alienated anyone and everyone. He'd yell on conference calls, was generally disrespectful to all and was just an all around jerk as a rule.

For example; We were doing some switching work to the data center in Bakersfield. We had a full time engineer on site and it was his show but he took ques from us at the Regional Data Center. Mr. Candy went out there to do the maintenance and literally wouldn't let the other engineer look at his laptop screen. He failed - couldn't get it done.

He goes out a second time with same results; also not letting the on site engineer even consider helping.

I show up the third time and the on site lets me in and says; "Aren't you going to get your laptop?"

I say, "No, chris - this is your Data Center - you're going to do this and I'm going to help."

Chris grins of course and gets setup. We figure out the problem after about an hour and I head back to LA.

The end result is the Chris is now a better engineer than he was a few hours ago of course which was one of my goals to begin with. These guys were great to work with and I loved every minute of it. Then they promoted the other guy.

They announced it in a meeting with everyone. I got up from that meeting (not jumped up or anything) and walked out calmly. I packed my computer up and went home and went surfing for the rest of the day. The boss called me later that afternoon and said "What's up?"

I told him I had to take care of something and so I left. I came in the next day and asked him to pull out my last review and tell me why Mr. Candy just got promoted over me.

He simply couldn't even make an excuse.

I told him that he needed to promote me very soon, I also started looking for a job that day. I took my time and 3 months later he pulled me into his office and told me reluctantly that he simply couldn't get me promoted. So; having just received a good job offer and having already accepted it I gave notice right there on the spot.

It was a bit on the gratifying side but I must say - I miss that job and it sucks that *I* had to leave when I was the good one.

That's the way it goes though I suppose.

Cliff, you work for the state. Hello? Ever heard of Peter Prescription. Nowadays all you have is the false paycheck for OT. If you can prove that, he can likely be terminated.

Drop a line to the big boss regarding overtime, or give the boss enough time and let him figure it out. I work for the state of Oregon and have learned that you can be the most incompetent fool and still get ahead if you have a degree in arse kissing.

HIEDI

Hay, chops will take you far but people skills will promote you. Keep in mind, people skills to the folks who have the heavy desk. I know, it ain't right and it ain't fair but then again who ever told you it was a fair and just world?
