So if I have this right the progression is:
911 964 993 996 997 So what's all this about "I only like pre 1972 911's" Or "the 993 was the last REAL 911" Yes, I know the 996/997 are water cooled however if your average Joe/Jill see one rolling down the road they are going to see the beloved inverted bathtub silhouette with a rear mounted flat six and big red brake calipers peeking out from fat alloy wheels and say "oh look. a new 911". If a 993 is so different from a 996 then isn't a 993 also completely different from 911? Just seeing what I can stir up on a slow Saturday morning. ![]()

Okay so compared to a 1968 911 a 993 has a different engine, trans, suspension, and body but other than that they are just alike right?

From 64-98, the doors will swap. only slight mounting differences.

So what IS a 911?
If you need to ask, then you've never owned one. ![]()

Ummmmmmm.....did you notice that the front of a 996 is the same as a Boxster? Did you notice that its liquid cooled? Did you notice it weighs as much as a tank?
"With these differences in mind, many "purists" consider the 996 to be an altogether different car, at least in spirit, than the Carreras that preceded it as opposed to being a development of the original." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_996

You left out this part:
"the 996 platform was used as the basis for two lightweight GT variants called GT2 and GT3. The GT3 was based on the standard RWD Carrera, but was stripped of a great deal of equipment for weight savings, featured stiffer suspension, re-tuned brakes, racing seats and a high strung 3.6 litre boxer six engine making 375 horsepower (280 kW). In 2004 testing, the car produced 0-60 times of 4.0 seconds flat, and produced 1.13g on the skidpad, the highest number ever recorded by a street legal automobile. "

Uh, actually there were 993's with water cooled engines but I believe there was a very limited run before the 996 came out. To me they are all 911's.

Anywase I watched some british show that did a piece on the 993 and 996 and it said that there were a few of the 993's that did have the water cooled engine, but I guess they had things mixed up.

?!?!?!?!?!??!?!??
I know that Porsche built some 996 prototypes and 'disguised' them to look a little like 993 so the final form could not be distinguished, but no 993s had water cooled engines...not evne the most ardent Porsche fan could have gotten them ot make one of those as a 'Special Wishes car'. Of course British TV is not infallible.... |

Haven't this (and that other thread) proven that the only "real" Porsche is the one that the poster owns?

In my humble view. the 911 series as we know it ended with the '89 Carrera. Some might say it ended earlier, some later. I personally have no use for the 964. The 993 on the other hand is, I believe, destined for icon-status. It is a gorgeous car to look at, and the last of the air-cooled engines. The '97 TT model makes as much power as a new 997 Turbo, I think.
But again, the 911 was produced from about 1965 until 1989. The parts are all interchangeable. In fact, most of the parts are the SAME EXACT. Starting in 1990, many of the parts are different. And then the 993 is a whole different breed of cat. My dream car would be a galvanized tub with just a few things bolted on. 21/19 Tbars, shocks to match, race buckets, engine and transmission (3.6 VRam). For a daily driver, a 993.
