What Single Car Would You Buy If You Had $70K?

Not that I do, but I am ever planning for the future . . .

I'd lean towards a Ferrari 512BBi. I might even be able to justify it as a quasi-investment. They're not currently old enough to have real collectors' value, but in 10 years . . . ?

The only Porsches currently under $70K that I can see going up meaningfully in value are the 356s, and they just don't do it for me. By "meaningfully" I mean doing much better than bond yields, net of maintenance, insurance, and other carrying costs, and by a significant dollar amount (this last excludes a 914 that might go from $5K to $7K, for example). For most 911s, I think there were too many made for them to ever be really valuable, except the ones that already are over $70K - 959, various RSes, and so on.

Old cars that still get a rise outa me....

1. 275 GTB4...way too expensive for me
2. California Spyder.....if I could only win the Lotto

Now we are getting realistic

3. 1972/73 911S....world class ride...
4. 356 Speedster/Cab....maybe not world class ride..but certainily world class style....

The new BMW M5 (with the V10) or the Mercedes AMG E55 (469 HP!) I doubt either can be bought for $70K

scottmandue 07-23-2005 03:36 PM

Well if we were talking NEW car and not investment I would go for a Boxster S or wait for a Caymen...

If you concerend about resale how about the limited edition 911's like the American or a speedster?

mikester 07-23-2005 03:42 PM

993 carrera - period.

Not 70k but it's all I want.

If were to buy a sedan I really like the infinity G35 sedan, and coupe. I gots me a family so the sedan would probably be it. I know it's not a super car like the BMW or Mercedes but I sure does like 'em.

$70K wouldn't get me a lot over here. A '99 Boxter maybe. But then I'd have no money for a replacement engine when it blows up ;-)

jyl 07-23-2005 04:05 PM

My close second would be a Series 1 XKE coupe. Probably as good a quasi-investment as the Boxer, although it wouldn't cost $70K.

I can think of various less expensive cars I've always wanted - Austin-Healey 100-4, BMW 3.0CS, etc - but I can't see having a fleet of cars. Not in the SF Bay where you're lucky to have parking for two cars.

Beck 904 replica

I like what i have :)

But maybe apply a RUF Yellowbird Conversion to the Roach to make it a Blackbird.

already have it...and $70K wouldn't buy it.

They only made 1400 of my car...its gotta be valuable someday right? Maybe in 2219 if I keep it in a moisture free garage.

Get a cherry 993 - 1996 and take the rest and buy that new coupe that GM or Chrysler is coming out with - put only a few miles on it. Put it up on blocks and wait 10 years. They will have dicontinued it then you can sell it on Ebay. I wish I did that with the Yugo. I bet that $3000 investment would fetch a cool $3300 today!

jyl 07-23-2005 09:40 PM

Yeah, well, I'd like the investment to pay off while I still have my teeth not to mention my consciousness.

operationcougar 07-23-2005 10:37 PM

i saw an artical on it not to long ago - boxsterS with a carbon fiber widebody, doors and hood, also had a 993 engine conversion. that was one hell of a monster

and with the money saved over i could get the 6spd getrag conversion, suspension, some new wheels, and a custom twin turbo for my 740i

onewhippedpuppy 07-24-2005 05:15 AM

Either an M5, or a 993 TT. Now how do I go about collecting my money?

kach22i 07-24-2005 05:43 AM

Single car?

Do you mean a daily driver putting it through Michigan's car eating pot hole ridden salt infested roads year round?

A Ferrari is not a daily driver, that ends that thought.

Since we are talking cars and not investment collectables which is another thread; I'm going to say a late model C4 911, convertible with hard top shell.

jyl 07-24-2005 06:17 AM

Not, it doesn't have to be a daily driver. I'm thinking more a weekend car with investment potential.

A black 2000-2005 BMW M3 coupe. My friend's parents bought him an '00 last year when he turned 16 and it is (was until yesterday) in pristine condition. Long story, but the bimmer guys and I were going for a drive on Mines Rd. in Livermore, and an 850i was going too fast, flipped, and another guy stopped around the blind corner to look, and my friend in his M3 rear ended him. Scary since I was only 6 cars behind them! So yeah, a black M3 would be my choice.

id10t 07-25-2005 05:33 AM

2 of the nicest 356 coupes I could get... or a nice cab and a driver coupe...

ValveFloat 07-25-2005 06:30 AM

If someone gave me 70k to throw at a car right now, I'd get this:
