Gas stove (cooktop) repair question
Oh mighty OT list -- we have such a diverse group here that I figured somebody might be able to toss me a clue on this truly OT question.
We have a nice built-in 5-burner gas cooktop that was installed approx. 10 years ago by the previous owners. It's a somewhat obscure (at least here in the States) British make called Creda, which is now owned by Hotpoint. The electric burner ignitors often will not shut off, and continue clicking and sparking well after the gas flame is started. At this point two burners -usually- work OK but the other three almost always have this problem. In general, what "tells" these kind of ignitors to turn off? Unfortunately, a quick Google search indicates that spare parts for this thing look totally unavailable in the US and marginally available in the UK. Might be asking for advice on a replacement shortly... Any advice greatly appreciated!

If you totally strike out, I get to London once a month or so, and could scrounge parts if you get me the lead and address.
Lately I have been finding obscure Honda bike parts in Oz.... amazingly, they have lots of NOS parts there, and the exchange rate there is far better than the UK. You might look there too.

I suppose disassembling and inspecting/cleaning everything under the burners couldn't hurt at this point. Seems like it might be a real PITA to find a replacement that will fit the existing counter opening. This one is quite shallow/low-profile too, like 3" or so and there's a drawer directly underneath.

Yep, take it apart ....Sounds like a stuck/shorted contact.
.. .When you turn the switch to the "ignite" position, your engaging the spark-ignition module. (a coil type thing. . .in a little box). (zap zap zap ...)

More modern cooktops don't have an "ignite" position, they'll spark until a themocouple senses heat-you can usually see the wire probe at each burner. Cleaning them sometimes helps. I have one burner that will do this, and what I do is start it for a few (maybe 10-20) seconds before I put a pan on it, which allows it to heat more rapidly.
