Oh, I thought this thread would be about someone thinking your 911 had a Hemi! Whew! I think the Chrysler Hemi craze is pathetic in a way... but then I wonder what the Mopar guys think of us 911 guys constantly bickering over water cooled 911s that came out over 6 years ago?!?!

Yup, just ask the Japanese. "The new, 300 hp Nissan Titan." Why do they feel the need to bribe, err, give, a V8 standard? Why do they not produce many commercials without letting you know how many horsepower their cars have? Why was Nissan asking for a CAFE exemption for the Titan, since they head below the minimum average with it?

Or ask our friends across the pond. Who really needs a 500hp M5, a 600hp SL, a 400hp Jag, a 450hp Porsche SUV, or a 450hp Audi? Probably to move the 2 to 2 1/2 tons of (unreliable) electronic junk on the cars. Why do they escalate among each other? Competition.

The 300 has a Mercedes E suspension and has been noted for decent handling. Not 911 quality, but not bad. There's no new car on the road that handles like the car of 30-40 years ago that you, in YOUR ignorance, probably assume Detroit still produces.

GM turns a profit everywhere else in the world except North America. They're even making strides in Europe. So you're right...perhaps we are a bunch of hillbillies for slamming our HOME industry (with outdated reasoning to boot), then we can all wonder why jobs are exiting the country.

What bothers me as they have not gone through the trouble to make it even look like the 426 hemi. Where is the orange paint, where is the plug wires through the middle of the valve cover?? And how many 17 year old know what one is, much less want one? The earth is ruled by baby-boomers - sad times.

Given a long road course like Road America, I would bet that stock 300C SRT-8 would give a stock 911 a run for its money: 425 hp 6.1L Hemi, 360mm (14.2in) Brembo brakes, Mercedes engineered suspension (Bilstein) and transmission, and Goodyear Eagle F1 255/45 tires.

A 2005 old-tech-pushrod-motored Corvette can beat a new 2005 997 around Brainerd International or the infield course at Milwaukee .... I drove both cars on both courses and had faster times with the Vette.

LMAO. *ahem* I grew up in Detroit, and I visit all the time. I am perfectly aware of what Detroit produces today. I did not make a blanket statement about American cars, but you seem to have went off on a rant about it.

My post was about Chysler putting large engines in their cars and calling it progress. Your last statement about 'home industry' is just absurd. HOME industry? Ever heard of the global economy? And you acuse me of outdated reasoning?

Frankly, as a longtime muscle car fan, it pisses me off at times, that car companies are trying to bring the "muscle car" back.
these "new cars with the old names", will never have the style, class, originality and power of thier namesakes. Leave them be...

Vin--The new Charger SRT-8 with 425 HP is plenty powerful.

D/C and Ford have "got it right" with the Charger/300/Magnum and the Mustang(the new Shelby GT500 is going to be wicked). GM has missed the boat with the new "GTO", but if they produce the Camaro that has been circulating around--they may finally be onto something.

Actually, the New Mustang, and Charger are the only cars that I would consider buying new--and maybe a Cadillac CTS. the rest are either overpriced or blandmobiles.

Scott Settlemeier was the GM brand manager for Camaro. They stopped production in the 2002 model year. Scott still has the Camaro brand manager title. Does that tell you something? SmileWavy

The GTO was a quick attempt to fill a hole. The Australian Holden Monaro already had the LSx engine architecture, and was reasonably easy to US certify. It was never a long-term plan. I agree that the GTO missed the mark. (Although the '05/06 with the 400hp LS2 allows you to overlook a few shortcomings)

The next-gen Camaro is poised to stomp the new Mustang. There is talk of the SS carrying a 'detuned' 7.0L LS7 (from the '06 Z06 - sans the exotic dry-sump and titanium rods) that is rumored to be worth about 475hp. Enough to one-up the GT500.

If you think the height of the muscle car era was in 1969, check out the streets today.

Where do the Big Three invest a lot of their money? GM's putting 5.6 billion dollars of it this year just into American healthcare coffers. That's my rationale for calling it a "home" industry. Plus, their corporate headquarters, history, and many of their car sales are here. Car companies that don't have their HQ here make small investments in NA compared to GM, Ford, and Chrysler.

Your post was indeed about Chrysler's engines. But I countered that everybody else is doing the same thing, and rattled off various companies' offerings. The only difference is Chrysler gave their engines a name, and now everybody wants to buy them. Nothing wrong with that..

One other thing I don't get...OHV engines aren't old tech...they're actually a newer design than OHC. Whether they're better is for another thread...but IDK if they're "old-tech."

And yes, I probably did fly off the handle above. But I am tired of hearing people who slam American cars without a good reason, so perhaps I overreacted to this. We can agree to disagree.:)
