Home Network wiring....
Bought the house and it was wired with double outlets, Std RJ-11 on top and RJ-45 on the bottom. The RJ-45's are wired:
Pin out appears to be this: 1 green white 2 green 3 orange white 4 blue 5 blue white 6 orange 7 brown white 8 brown It matches the color coding on the diagram in the outlets. However, the wiring comes back as a bundle and is un-terminated at the other end. It looks like I need to install the RJ-45 plugs on the end of the cables. Should I match the order of wiring above? |
Yup - match on both ends. I'd get a punchdown panel to hook 'em all to, then go from panel to switch with short (3') patch cables.
|
Yep, match the wires. It's a straight through cable that you're making. I'm assuming you'll have a switch to plug them all into.

Or go wireless WiFi G

Yeah, that's frustrating too.

Ok, next stupid question....
On the RJ45 plug, where do I start, and with which color. Cables I have laying around start with Brown on the left (Looking into the cable, with retainer down). |
I have wireless in the house, but not all of my computers are wireless and the house is wired....Might as well hook it up.
|
I bagged my wireless sytem and went all hard wire.
Here's a page in wiring: http://www.9thtee.com/networkingts.htm I recommend the Leviton Quick Port system for easy snap together wall plate systems, available in many configurations. Come with a punch tool and easy to follow instructions. Home depot carries them. |

That should do it.

God-d@mn phone company!
In one jack, the one where the cable modem, network printer and one of the primary PCs home is....is dead. For some reason, when we had the second phone line installed, he swapped some of the wires with the two outlets, like he planned to use the Network jack for the second phone. He started hooking it up that way, then changed his mind and installed an actual second outlet, but he f'd up the wiring. SBC I HATE YOU! I feel better now. |
