Australian' leader has the right idea on terror
It is good to see that the US and Britian are not the only countries who have leaders with a backbone:
Deport terrorists, says Lib MP 26-07-2005 From: AAP A FEDERAL Liberal MP is pushing for the deportation of immigrants convicted of inciting or engaged in terrorism. Queensland MP Steve Ciobo said today he believed there was strong community support to annul the citizenship of immigrants who were convicted of terrorist offences and deport them to their country of origin. "I think it's right and proper that if someone chooses to take a citizenship pledge which says that they will swear allegiance to their country and ... they then turn their backs on it I think Australians would be very supportive of saying 'Your citizenship should be annulled and we would expect you and we would do what you could to facilitate you leaving Australia'," Mr Ciobo told ABC radio. Mr Ciobo, a member of the parliamentary Liberal Party's advisory committee to the attorney-general, said there would be some difficulties in certain cases, particularly where a person refuses to leave the country. "That is something, obviously, where every effort would need to be made," Mr Ciobo said. "Where there are cases of dual citizenship I would envisage that it wouldn't be a large problem to repatriate someone back into that country. "Where that person would be rendered stateless that would obviously prove to be a fairly significant challenge but in that context I would suggest we would have to deal with them in Australia." He said the move would be strongly supported in the community, despite some thinking it treated new citizens differently under the law. "I could understand that some people might have a concern with that but speaking as someone who's the son of an immigrant and married to an immigrant I don't believe that this is a wide-scale problem," he said.

As an Australian, I'd just like to say, "I'll believe it when I see it."
As a police officer, I charged and had convicted several particularly "bad" individuals of Eastern European background - seriously awful ***** - had to do with small children type stuff... The maggots got 7 years, were out in 5, and the Immigration department refused to begin deportation procedures upon their release. For politicians, talk is cheap!

It's the perfect political stunt/statement - there's no way it could be implemented but it sure grabs peoples attention. Got to say the idea is appealing.

From today's NY Times:
"Mr. Omar, the police said, was among the men arrested in Birmingham on Wednesday morning in connection with the attacks. As for Mr. Ibrahim, the authorities say he tried to blow up the No. 26 bus in east London. He, too, ran and escaped when his bombs failed to go off. He remains at large. Both men came to Britain as so many immigrants do, fleeing something else. The circumstances of their arrival, as well as the disclosures that both received social security benefits and state housing, incensed critics of a government asylum policy that, many say, has allowed anti-Western extremists to proliferate in Britain. "Welcomed here as the dependents of asylum seekers, educated in our schools, taking full advantage of all the benefits this country so generously offers - now they want to destroy us," The Daily Mail, which has long fulminated against what it calls a too-generous asylum system, said in an editorial on Wednesday. "Could there be a more chilling snapshot of the madness of a system implemented by successive governments that has left this country at the hands of murderous fanatics?" the editorial said." |
