Army Service Awards???
I was looking at my father's DD214 today. I do not understand the list of commendations. Can anyone translate for me. He was in Korea during the war as part of the 2nd Infantry Division. He never really talked about it much.
The list of commendations is as follows: Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service stars, Combat Infantry Badge, U N Service Medal, Occupation Service Medal (Germany), Dist Unit Cit (DACO 727 Aug 51) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Kevin |
From first to last:
Korean Service Medal: A US campaign medal Two bronze starts meant that he served two combat tours. More infor here: http://www.history.navy.mil/medals/korea.htm Combat Infantry Badge - it is a chest badge - It means your father was an Infantryman and definately fired shots in anger. U.N. Service Medal - The Korean War was a UN operation, therefore everyone who fought on our side got this one. Distinguished Unit Citation: A presidential award to a specific unit (DACO 727, Aug 1951) It is worn as a purple ribbon surrounded by a gold frame. Hope this helps, hollar if you need anything else. Thanks guys, I will relay this info to my mom. I do know that he was at Heartbreak Ridge. One of those things that I wish I had asked more about but glad I didn't. A few times he would start talking only to drift away in thought. I do remember seeing the purple ribbon with the frame. Can these items be replaced? I am not sure where they ended up but the ones I do remember I havent seen in quite some time.
Thanks Again, Kevin |
