any boat owners out there
Ok as if I did not have enough to do I bought a boat. It was cheap enough and I could fix it to make it decent for a reasonable price (1900 for the 19 foot rinker boat witha 4.3 v-6) I put another 700 in it for lower unit and alternator rebuild and new battery etc. Took it out last night for the first time with the family. Ran fine but when we parked it to go swimming and then tried to restart it would not ! (now I look stupid as I can rebuild a porsche but can't get the boat to restart) I then get it fired up and go for a few laps around the lake and it runs great . I idle down for a minute to rearrange all the kids and then take off again and then it happens. It stutters and pops and then diesels for a minute then dies and won't restart. Now I have a 2600 piece of s@*t that was suppose to be fun for the whole family. Does anybody have any ideas for where to look first. I was thinking timing chain but may distributor??

I cant help with your current issue, other than to say I was bit by the boating bug too.
I am looking into moving to the CT side of the long island sound & buying a boat at the same time. And we thought Porsches were expensive.

I know that our Cris Craft has a current draw that will kill the battery in about 30-45 min. We've unhooked the radio, hour meter and anything else we found and still a dead batter in 30 min.
fix - disconnect battery when we anchor to fish or swim. Were so used to it now it's second nature. Good Luck! -Wade

89 rinker. It did flood out but The deiseling is what baffled me. Maybe the fuel filter clogged and float level is incorrect.. Keep the ideas coming

Ben,what brand motor is it? check the shift interruptor switch. ( I'm assuming its an I/O). Thats the microswitch that temporarily kills the ignition as your shifting into gear. But it most likey sounds like a carb problem.
Welcome to the wonderful world of boating! ![]()

Not sure if it has a choke pull-off? Really sounds like a too-rich condition. Yank it off and clean 'er out!

Shift iterupter switch. How do I test that?? The dieseling is what did it for me along with the pop when it died. It is a gm 4.3 Needless to say my wife wants to get rid of it asap

Heck. you can probably buy a carb cheaper than your time to clean and rebuild. Check the dizzy to be sure, look at the timing, but I'll betcha' fuel system...

The hard restart and dieseling also sounds like it may be overheating.

That seems a bit warm.
Look at your impeller, pull the plugs on the block and manifolds if you can get to them. Make sure everything drains ok. Don't know where it was run, but if in a sandy or muddy area, outdrive can be a giant vacuum cleaner packing your water jacket tight. Ask me how I know! Still think it's the carb...

Is it the steel or bronze gear? If it is shot, then there is a good chance the gear on the cam is gone too.

Kind of odd behavior though, don't you think?
Runs good near WOT, then hard starting, bad idle, then runs good near WOT again? Not disagreeing, just a little skeptical....

No really it is sitting on my desk this morning its junk. I think from the looks of things it was worn for a while and must have had timing issues before I owned it and just finally went . The teeth are really sharp

Well then that's good news!
An easy fix! Should just be able to get the gear, but it may have worn because the bushings are bad too...
