What's more fun that root canal? Having it done a second time on the same tooth!

Yes kids, that was my fun today. Had root canal about 2 years ago on a cracked tooth along with a crown. Started having some pain and finally went and got it checked. Yup, an abscess at the root. Went to an endodontist today (didn't even know what that was), and he said he could either drill it out and do it over again, or do surgery going in from the side and cleaning it out that way. I opted for the former...cheaper and he might be able to see if the root is cracked or see why the infection started. And its $1K cheaper.

Problem is I have a temp filling until he finishes next wednesday. And I forgot and ate a chewy bagel and chewed with that tooth. I'm missing some temp filling now :rolleyes:

Tastes great, less filling.

Lesser of the evils. Unfortunately no guarantees with a root canal. Hang in there and hope for the best. If it doesn't work out you'll be shopping for an implant. You'll need to practice bending over for that hit. Good luck.

My Dad was a dentist. When I was very young (like grammar school) when he finally came home from work, we usually got called to the dinner table. If there was something for dinner that he really liked, and there wasn't really enough to go around (he and I used to compete for the mashed potatoes), he would start the dinner conversation with... 'You should have seen this root canal abcess that came in today, geez, I had to cut clear down to the jawbone thru all the gristle and decay and then drill thru all the blood and yank out the broken little bone pieces and corpuscles.... '

My sisters would usually start gagging and run for the bathroom about then, my mom would turn white, and run from the room, and he and I would finish off the mashed potatoes unchallenged. I knew he was kidding, and we were giggling as we ate whatever it was.

You had to understand the sense of humor of a Dentist. Steve Martin's portrayal of the Dentist in 'Little Shop of Horrors' came closest.

Years later when he did my first root canal, I realized he wasn't kidding...

I had a root canal when I was sixteen, back then they used laughing gas. Felt nothing during but cried like a baby when the drug wore off.

Sounds like my old man to a tee. A periodontist. His favorite mealtime conversation involved puss, blood splattering his glasses when he hit a vein, people biting him, etc.

Or...

he'd bring home X-rays and a light box, and let my sister and I examine the negatives in which he'd say he'll probably drill down to puss or blood that would splatter his glasses once he hit a vein, etc.

It could have been worse...

I work with a woman whose dad was an insurance lawyer. He brought home photos of people who somehow stuck their limbs down garbage disposers, inside running car engines and wood chippers. The dual shotgun suicide to the head was a big hit. "Look at the jawbone coming out of the ear canal..."

Hmmm...pass the gravy.

fwiw.. the periodinist will do implants after I get checked by one of those beep thump gizmos to see where the vein is before he starts his act. I never heard of that before.

I thought dentists had the highest suicide rate in the med industry.

Generalization: All dentists are ex-nazis.

nope...just local. This guy was pretty amazing. Three quick shots that barely hurt, a brief pause, then he started working. Best guy with the needle I've ever had. Only the right area numbed, just enough and long enough for the work.

Had one done almost a couple Months ago. Went in, my dentist drilled down but could not find the root so she sent me to another the same day. He had the microscope to finish the job but as it turns out didn't take my ins. and wanted $600.00 right then... I refused and left. Insurance took care of everything later.
What a day that was...:rolleyes:
