Question concerning Axle Ratio

Which axle ratio provides the lower engine rpm at the same driving speed assuming that the transmissions are identical: 3.73 or 4.10?

I have always been under the impression that the larger that the axle ratio was the lower geared the vehicle was. I am looking into purchasing a truck and in reviewing the sales brochure the following data is stated - for an axle ratio of 3.73 the maximum loaded trailer weight is 2,640 lbs whereas an axle ratio of 4.10 is 2,500 lbs (which contradicts my previous assumption). Since I will not be hauling anything on a regular basis I want to have the most economical platform.

I am currently looking at a Ford Ranger Edge - any input here would be appreciated also.

3.73. The lower the number numerically, the "taller" the ratio. Your impression is correct.

Rear end ratio isn't the only thing that affects towing, but you're right, I would expect the 4.10 rearend to tow a little better.
