The Measure of a Man
All kidding aside, what do you think is the measure for a man? Joke about yard sticks to measure your johnson but this goes further. Anotomical references aside, what are the "things" that make a man, a true "Man"? Someone else can do the true "woman" thread. Here is what I thought off the top of my head. Are there more?
1) Provide for his family (if married), or himself if not. 2) Protect his family 3) Be true to his word 4) Be true to his God 5) Be Honest (lie only for a good stories sake) 6) Consider others Feelings 7) Remain Calm 8) Be Able to Solve Problems 9) Only fight for the honor and safety of your loved ones - then fight to win at all costs. 10) Bath regularly If a man can be this and do these then I would consider him a true man. |
This should get interesting.....
Mike, I think you got it pretty close. I could only add one thing for those of us with kids. If you are considering doing something wrong or illegal(speeding doesn't count here), think about how your kids will see you if you are caught. Here I thought this was another of your medical threads.;) |
What about being able to bait a hook, shoot a gun or torque a bolt? If a man cannot do those things, is he truly a "man"?
|
Hmmmmmm. I might have to disagree just a bit there.
I don't bait my hooks(don't like worms), I have shot a gun(my wife is the hunter, though), but I can fix just about anything automotive, do home improvements, and I cook. EDIT: How come we aren't out driving our cars tonight? |
Cooking falls into #1, but being askeerd of worms? Spiders OK, but we will have to let the jury decide on that one.
|
This ought to get it rolling....
He ought to be able to vote his conscience rather than the party line. |
They are too close to snakes for me to be touchin', my friend. I probably should get over that before my boy figures it out, though.
|
sing - but if he was a true man, his overall conscience would be his parties line? Not every Democrate or Republican believes 100% of their parties position but the balence has to tip into the favor of one or the other?
So, no single lever votes...vote on the problems and the solution rather than the party? |
How about "a real man only removes objects from his nose with the aid of a handkerchief"?
|
oh ha - snakes have fangs - understand your position, worms have mucus...you pick your nose don't cha?
|
Woodpie - I swear to God I didn't see your post! That is too freak'n funny! And no, a true "man" will dig (but not while in traffic or at the dinner table!).
|
Woodpie - I think that refers to #6...

while we are on the topic of what it takes.. i got engaged, and will try to give my child on the way, and it's mother the right things. if any recall the "wisemen" thread of a few weeks back, i thank most all of you again for your time and thought's on the matter.
since you were here moses... now back to lube's thread. |
6) Consider others feelings. Check! Never at the dinner table. Check!
:) |
I don't like 9.
Sounds like some Muslim crap(the honor part). Yes, fight for your family, but also have some humility. |
Add:
Able to admit his mistakes; to himself as well as others. Puts others first. Can belch in three languages. |
I heard it said by a rapper, of all things, but how about this:
"If you can't do what you say you are going to do, when you say you are going to do it, then you're not a man". I guess you would only be a boy. Pretty close to what Moses said, I guess. |

You have to stand by your word and your word has to be true. This means not fighting ANY ticket you get if you were doing what you got a ticket for. Lying about speeding is still lying, period. If anyone wants to argue about it, fine but you take the good with the bad. Have to say that Jeff Higgins additions hit home as well. JoeA |
