I just scored this John Deere 826D Snow Blower, barely used fro 1/4 the cost new. I am amazed at the quality of this compared to the Craftsman that it is replacing. I was wondering who else owns and John Deere products and if you thought they are worth the extra money?
I am just glad I have this, even though it 95 degrees outside, I am now looking forward to snow!

I have a JD snow blower. But I'll 1-up you; I got mine for free. Albeit, the engine was blown but I took an 8hp Briggs of a Craftsman snowblower I also got for free. The motor doesn't match, paint wise, but it runs like a top and the JD components are of very high quality.

On the other hand, I had a John Deere commercial lawn mower, 48" gear driven, and it was a POS. My Lesco, which in theory should be inferior quality, is FAR better.

Craftsman is pathetic. I can remember when I was a kid, and they actually made decent power tools. Damn shame....

In lawn and garden products, a good product is hard to find and initially expensive. Taking a few hours a year and caring for your equipment will repay you many times over and you won't have to keep spending $1000 every two years to buy junk.

That being said, Simplicity is one of, if not the last tractor manufacturer that sells dealer-only. I have a Simplicity that's 40 years old, and I can get many mechanical parts for it. It's worth buying from and supporting an (all-American!) company that stands by their products and doesn't hawk the newest tractor when a few simple parts could fix your old one.

Hopefully anyone so enamored w/John Deere products at least has the decency to paint their car (Porsche I hope) appropriately. Offered in jest by someone who has gladly given up his John Deere tractor (nothing against John Deere understand) for a townhouse with no yard (work) and obviously no snow (see address - I did however, grow up in northern Canada so I know about snow - and can appreciate your excitement and need for this product)

Nostatic, you don't know what snow is? Man winter's great. Summer'd be all right too, if it wasn't so hot while I cut my fire wood.

Simplicitys are nice machines, dad has one and I'm impressed. But I like my Cub better, it's older, American, and will outlive that Simplicity. As for snow removal, I plow.

Looks like the Tecumseh Snow King engine...great unit. I also like the brass wormscrew set-up for the chute. Much better than the earlier corkscrew rod.

Didn't you hear? We are experiencing global warming. Pretty some you guys in Maine and Michigan will have all the cactus and critters we have down here and we will end up looking like the Gobi desert!

We have the exact same unit, (or very close), at my parent's cabin in northern Wisconsin. It is pretty much a necessity, since a blizzard could completely snow them in, (or out), from the road which is a couple hundred yards away. That JD is an azz kicker. :cool:

AAAHHHHH! 6" of freshly fallen snow here in PA, fired up the Green Machine at 8:30 a.m. all done by 9:00, and I have the cleanest drive and sidewalk on the street.

Well cleared snow is a thing of beauty. Bravo.

The older Cubs are good tractors too, but I learned engine repair on the flathead cast iron Briggs engines. Amazingly simple and durable engines once you get the carb adjusted and keep them full of oil. Mmm, torque...

It's time for this thread to go into one-up mode. In order to clear my driveway, (1/4 mile) I have a Kubota 17 hp diesel, 4 wd hydrostatic tractor. Right now, its got a 48" snowblower on the back and a 40" bucket on the front. Even with that, I have had storms which left enough snow to take me all day (6 AM to 6 PM) to get everything cleared up.
Nostatic & LubeMaster77, if you want to pay for the shipping, I send you a sample of 'snow' in another few weeks. (Hint: get a truckload, the shipping rate is cheaper!)

A bit father south, I wheeled out my new Ariens to dispense with the 4 inches of wet crud that we got down here.

Not quite so happy. This is my first 2-stage blower, and I guess I need to adjust it lower or something. It didn't come close to cleaning the pavement as well as my old single stage Toro. Maybe a thin layer of slush left behind is the price I pay for the power to blast through 18" snow later in the winter?
