A/C on a 97 volvo

My girlfriend's volvo's A/C just stopped blowing cold. She took it to a shop that quoted her $800 to install a new evaporator. She wants a new car anyway, sooo...

Is the car R134 and can I just put a can in it?

The car could have a number of leaks or the compressor might be bad. Either pay ~1k to fix it and keep or buy a new car. Good luck.

All Volvo's used R134a from '93 on. Note that evaporator failure is VERY common in the 850. $800 is actually pretty reasonable. The evaporator had been replaced on my '97 850R just before I bought it and the dealer charged the PO around $1500 if I remember correctly.

I bought an extended warranty with my 850. Well worth it. Two transmissions replaced. Had to pay for the AC myself as it was past 100kmiles.

Watch out for the A pillar weakness where the door return mechanism operates. The steel is just too thin and the design is poor. It is a $600 job to fix. Get it checked before too late.

The quality of all Volvos is suspect after 92. My 92 had 288k miles and in perfect condition when we gave it to a neighbor's son for college. My 93 was at 140k miles when we sold it to a mechanic for $1000 with all of it's problems.

just my 2 cents.

Yep, the evaporator failed on my '97 T-5 at 135K. An independent shop charged $1k versus $1.3 at the dealer.

How is you ABS circuit board holding up? There is a place in CA that will repair it for about $150 versus a new one for over $1K.
