911 !!! But why ?
Driving to work this morning. Sun rising. Beautiful day. No traffic on the highway, cruising and just felling fantastic.
Started to think I am lucky to afford an (old) Porsche. I have not driven that many sports cars but I have known since childhood that a Porsche was the only car for me. I know all the usual arguments in favor of these cars, but honestly that would go for a lot of other sports cars too. So what is it that makes these little cars so cherished among us believers ? You ask a BMW fan and he will tell you thats the better car. And so on... I have a slight feeling I have bought the legend, as it where. Its just that, as everybody says, as soon as I get in my little car it really brings a smile to my face (literary!) and I feel all happy driving it. Strange thing...:) |
What about us crazy few who love Porsches and BMWs? Love the comfort and speed of a e30 M3 and the Look and handling of the 911. I'm a very confused man.:D

Having a 911, well, it's like having a hot girlfriend who will go down on you with enthusiasm, be able to drink beer with you and can throw a football with a decent spiral - what more can a guy ask for?
|
cliche, but it's true ---there is no substitute
|
As usual, a very pin point distillation from LubeMaster !! :D

always loved that poster
the view from the sky looking down on a targa, top down guy sitting in the drivers seat and his sweetie bent over giving him the business and the caption read " everybody wants one" |
haven't seen that poster for sale now for yrs.

Who gave this thread 5 stars ? I can see how the poster is worth it though.
Side tracking, parked my car in the subterranean garage at work this morning. See this woman trying to park her station wagon in the lot next to my friends 944. She does several attempts but she is in to a sharp angel, but does not seem to understand that. I start walking toward her to help her out when I hear this loud ear cracking schreeeek... ouch! Safe to say my buddy turned rather pale when I told him. |
ahhhh, thanks 86 911
haven't seen the poster for yrs. |
It's the artistic curve of the rear quarter panels that catch you when you come into the garage.
It's the sound of the door going shut, that firm "I'm well built" that reassures you of the high quality engineering. It's the immediate rumble of air-cooled happiness at your back, settling neatly into a clean burble, sounding for all the world like a purring Yeti. It's the looks from passers-by, the impossible handling, the balance, the finesse, the joy of working on a well-engineered car, the roar of contentment from behind when you unleash the engine towards redline, the communicative feel from the steering as you confidently cut the corners. And even if you can't pinpoint those things, there is certain knowledge when driving a Porsche that there is no other car quite like yours. |
Those are just the excuses we use, when we try to explain. But really, what Markus is saying is true. If we have to explain it to you, you really don't understand. If you were a teenaged boy in the late sixties and/or early seventies, then you probably "get it."

I feel a connection with the past when I drive mine. This was a race car that happened to be street legal. The sound, the smell, and the little 911-only touches (ignition on the left, MASSIVE centrally located tach, heating and cooling systems that are complete afterthoughts).
