Running Microsoft Longhorn...
I downloaded an evaluation copy of Longhorn just see what's what. Functionally, it's really not that bad.
Visually, at least on the desktop, it's much different than XP. A big ol' clock plants itself in the upper right hand corner of the screen. I think it's cool instead of that little digital readout on the lower right. I actually like Longhorn (which, I guess, will be called Vista). It recognized nearly everything of importance to me on my IBM R40 Thinkpad. So I basically didn't need to download any drivers from IBM. The OS is a little slow, but this is still beta. Overall, not bad... |
This thread is worthless without screenshots!
|
Machine I loaded Longhorn on is at home. I wouldn't dare load a beta on something for work. In the meantime Google "longhorn;" tons of screenshots there. I'm just saying it works, and works well for a beta release.

I'll have to crack open my MSDN link and download it soon.
|
|
Just download Konfabulator and take your pick of clocks, all for 10mb of ram or (a lot) less...
... really, is there going to be a good reason to upgrade to Longhorn? I haven't bothered to investigate yet... |
Doesn't really look that much different to me. Seems a new bigger clock isn't that hard to do. I used this page as my desktop for quite a while.

I guess they are trying to give MAC sales a boost in half of the state of Texas and the rest of the midwest

I wonder how much Intel paid Microsoft to have the AMD CPU represented by a big question mark? ;)
I have MSDN Universal but am so behind on real work that I hadn't even contemplated playing with this beta. Is this supposedly the "final" beta or will there be another beta/gold coming up? That one I might load. |
Isnt' it "Vista" not Longhorn? What was that all about?
|
The 'Vista' thing is some marketing BS about bringing new clarity and confidence to your work with the PC http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/pukeface.gif

I thought it had something to do with "Chula Vista."
|
"clarity and confidence" is the new stuff that will be making sure you don't do anything bad on your PC, like copy cd's, make mp3's from cd's, copy/backup DVDs etc ...
BTW, you can recreate all the visual affects in longhorn/vista ising Stardock applications ( Object Desktop, DesktopX etc.. ) checkout http://www.wincustomize.com/ there are tons of longhorn stuff that you can use. You can also install an entire suite that will change evrything to longhorn while still maintaining XP Pro and not have the new watchdog stuff. |
All that time and effort.... and their fonts and images still look like ****.
And all those big menus and oversized titles? Lipstick on a pig, lipstick on a pig... |
I'm going to load the beta on my garage PC this weekend (Dell PowerEdge 400SC with 1GB RAM and 750GB hard drives, 2.8GHz CPU.
