yeah I quit paying dues too. same reason as most here I would guess.

I would only consider joining an organisation for the events they have, (track events), not to meet the people. I have plenty of real friends. That said, it still sucks to be in the presence of a bunch of jerks. Especially if you paid for the privilege.

Not doubting your appraisal of them, but did you extend your hand to anyone or try to initiate any conversations? Hobbiests in general are the biggest nerds on earth, and Porsche people definitely fit that profile, in my experience. Pelican gatherings are better because many of us already feel like we "know" each other from the BBS, but can still be pretty quiet for the shy types. Did it seem like others were laughing it up and knew each other, or was it just one big ice fest?

I have found many car nuts, (and other kinds of nuts), who were not outwardly friendly but warmed up pretty quickly once I asked them a couple of intelligent questions about their car/race team/etc... It's no different from talking to a sports nut, once they know that you are "one of them", it's all good.

Definitely quit that group, sounds like there is nothing there for you. I have never joined the PCA in 30 years of (non-continuous) Porsche ownership. The POC is another story. That organization kicks ass. (At least in SoCal). You will actually learn how to drive the POS w/ them, and have more fun than the proverbial barrel of lesbians.

Dan,

I'm not sure about that one. I know this region is pretty involved in DEs and the pres has just started racing his 930.

I was going to sign up for my first Porsche DE at Blackhawk but, now I'm not so sure. I've heard horror stories of the poor slob in an older car who is left waiting for an instructor after they all scrambled for the cooler, newer cars. Kind of takes me back to grade school when the "captain" chooses sides and there's always the last kid who has to hear-"Naw-you can just have him, I don't want him."

Can't say I would look foreward to that.

No I didn't. I thought about it, but the message seemed pretty clear. Maybe it would be like what happened to you and they would warm up, but to be honest, I just don't want to put that kind of effort into something that should be so easy.

Lol-very funny. No comment. ;)

I didn't stick around too long. They were doing a raffle and seemed somewhat preoccupied with that. They also seemed to be very interested in hanging out by a 997, which doesn't really interest me that much.

I should also add that most people were older than me and somewhat dressed for the occasion. I was wearing a ball cap, sandels, and shorts, so I guess I probably fit the image of dirtbag mid-year driver:).

On a lighter note, I made the 30 mile trip in record time, with bursts up to 130 and a nice roll on with a 540i.

:D

I find many of the social events at my PCA a little boring. On the other hand, go to and AX, a track day, or perhaps a tour and you'll find the cool people.

i always get a great reception whenever we have a little get together here in K.C> Of course, just because my brothers and I have great cars is not the only reason. They want my beer, and i want their BBQ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sign up for the Blackhawk DE. There are a lot of great guys from Gruppe B ( http://www.gruppeb.org/forum2/index.php ) that should be in attendance.

Well, I have NEVER had a bad experience at a PCA event. Sure, there are some folks who join because of the perceived prestige of it, but we're all lovers of the marque at heart.

ANY gathering of people is bound to contain folks that aren't your cup of tea. Hell, you could go to the annual convention of underwater basket weavers and find somebody that rubbed you the wrong way. That ain't PCA, or Gruppe-anything, it's human behavior.

The 50th anniversary Parade was one of the most fun events I've ever been to-- met a bunch of fellow SWB enthusiasts, took a lot of pictures, even met some guys who were willing to open up their trunks and let me take pictures of electrical minutiae. I would never let a negative experience keep me away from the oppportunity.

As far as being snubbed by the water-cooled crowd, well, just smile if that happens. For while Bruce Anderson maintains that one should buy the newest Porsche one can afford, we all know the truth: one should buy the OLDEST Porsche one can afford, and drive the living beejaysus out of it at every opportunity.

I think it is a regional thing. My expriences with Kansas City Region have been outstanding. Good people, no pretensions, everyone has a ball. The snotballs and A**holes must have gone to St. Louis-a hellhole all it's own. Nord Stern Region out of MN has been great too.

I just read the article and I"m thinking since I own a Porsche AND an Audi, I can add BOTH stats together ( I should be getting it 3.3 x a week on average!).

Oooops. Amost forgot to follow up.

I attended the Blackhawk DE last week. It was the 180 degree opposite experience of all my previous PCA experiences. I had a GREAT time. The people were very friendly. I had all kinds of people compliment my lowly mid-year car-most of whom were driving much newer cars. I recognized a lot of these people from previous social events so I guess with driving as part of the venue, these otherwise reserved people come alive. I actually look forward to the next social event to talk more about DEs!

So....for anyone that has not participated in driving events, try them! It's the best way to get involved in the PCA.
