One of You Guys is a Sage, a Genius of Sorts...I Just Can't Remember Who - So Fess Up
We live on a cul-de-sac, across the street from a nice wood park with a pond. Needless to say it is an active place for parents to bring their kids. A woman down the street brings her young son out to the park a few times a week. He is a sweet kid, about 4, maybe 5 and often walks up our driveway if we are out in front and proceeds to play with our kid’s toys. It is somewhat obvious he is not like the other kids.
The first time he did this Max was a bit concerned. The mother was a little embarrassed but I told her it really wasn't a problem and my kids like to share their things. Max and Emma just looked at me like I was blue. The kid eventually rode off with his mother yapp'n at him. "Dad, what’s wrong with that kid?" Max asked. “There is nothing wrong with him, he just thinks different than other kids - he is autistic that’s all." “What’s that mean?” “You know how you can look at that tree and you see the tree, then you hear a car go by then you hear Mom call us for dinner then you hear or see something else? It’s like one thing then something else right? Bang Bang Bang. Someone who is autistic sees things all at once and sometimes it gets really confusing for them.” “But Dad, how can he do stuff if it’s like that?” “Well, sometimes autistic kids just kinda pull in and don’t want to do anything with anybody and they just may want to count sticks or paint or just sit and rock back and forth. It can be difficult but he seems like a pretty nice little guy and doing well.” “Ya, he’s OK I guess. But Dad, I wish he was like my other friends though.” “Max, you bring to the track the car you have, not the car you wish you had.” Now – I know I butchered that quote, but one of you guys had that as a tag and I want to give you the credit you deserve! So fess up! "

Mike - this is copied directly from Thom's profile:
"You go to the track with the Porsche you have, not the Porsche you wish you had." Anyway, great description of the event. I see the writing genes flow in the family... ![]() |

Tabs - seems like all the hard core BBQ guys here build their own and each has an opinion on the exacting design. Then there are the ones that buy theirs at lowes or Home Depot and they command about as much respect as a ricer at a PCA TT.
I think if you wanted to start an off shoot to the Pelican Board and have it centered around smokers and BBQ pits you might be on to something.

Well I find Klose to be a pretty big mfg of BBQ Pits...he was even on a Food Network program about BBQ...
Then there is Bates Pits...they seem to be more of a custom outfit...looking at their quality (welds) it seems to be good... BUT WHICH ONE????? Which one has the better REP???? I like the idea of a Horizontal Cabinet...after the Drum...but can't think of how I would use it....it runs at a lower temp for sausage and whole hogs... I guess...

Sage is good stuff. Not nearly so good as fresh Basil, though, in a sauce made from onions and garlic sauteed in olive oil, with fresh chopped tomatoes and a hint of Thyme.

Dan - thats my puntanesca (sp) sauce! A buddy from Italy showed me that if you do what you just wrote, then put it over some pasta it is absolutely wonderful - puntanesca (I am spelling it wrong) means whore in Italian. The whores would make it becasue it was quick and they could make and eat between tricks!

Mike,
That's a very good lesson that you're teaching your kids. You're a good father!

Mike,
What Azasadny said. But it seemed to me you were describing a kid with Attention Deficit Disorder (seeing things all at once, etc.). ADD was described to me as not being able to filter out the important stimuli vs. the unimportant so everything is a distraction. Psychostimulants (Ritalin Straterra-a new one) juices up the "filter" so the stimuli aren't so overwhelming. Autism, or "Autistic Spectrum Disorders" is an inability to comprehend and/or "process" social cues, make emotional attachments, have empathy, and in some cases, inability to differentiate animate from inanimate objects. A fascination with spinning, rotating or oscillating objects and unbelievable mathemtic (arithmetic) skills and triva are also frequently expressed in autistic disorders. Autism is a very weird condition with unknown cause and unknown cure. It expresses itself in a wide variety and degree of impairment. Some (me) theorize autism results from precocious cognitve development that precedes physical development in utero. Do you put the tomatoes in last? |
