what about the pets in the disaster?

not to downplay the human tragedy, but what happens to the dogs and cats? are they left to die?

island911 09-02-2005 10:52 AM

It's part of the human tragedy. :(

" Pets were not allowed on the bus, and when a police officer confiscated a little boy's dog, the child cried until he vomited. "Snowball, snowball," he cried."

The cunning and quick animals will fnd for themselves better than humans.

Ed Bighi 09-02-2005 11:02 AM

Downplay the human tragedy? Hell no. Aren't we supposed to love all creatures? Now what the fuch is the problem with one damn dog on the bus? Or even a few. I know that if I were a victim I would feel a little better if there was a pet or two around to make the situation a little less dreary. It might even make me feel less violent. Dogs tend to have that effect on people. But what the fuch have we become when we take the kid's pet? I guess that dog was so dangerous that to traumatize the kid was a better solution right? Or maybe his dog was one of the folks who looted some gun out of Wal Mart and started shooting at the one of the helicopters. Or maybe the pet had some disease that could affect someone who just got done wadding through spilled sewage. I tell you, I am outraged by this whole thing. It is a royal screw up from the top to to bottom including the knuckleheads among the victims. But this kid and his dog is the cherry on top for me. If I am ever in a flood, I'll make damn sure that I am in either Germany, Austria or Switzerland where I know that if my pet is with me, than it will be safe as well. But anyway, I am sending some money to these folks because I know damn well that if people aren't getting help, than the pets are getting even less. www.noahswish.org There are probably other organizations as well, but this is the only one I know of right now.

A friend of a friend of mine that I met while in New Orleans was on vacation when the Katrina hit. They had boarded their two dogs while away and now they have no way of getting in touch with the kennel or getting down to see what happened to their dogs or house. Fortunately they are safe.

vash 09-02-2005 11:10 AM

my dogs are my kids..they would get on the bus.

everything about this sucks. i havent prayed in a long time, til now.

Ed Bighi 09-02-2005 11:17 AM

I know. My dog is either with me or my wife just about all day long. I am one of those people who believes that you should only get a pet if you are going to treat it as good as you do your family. The morning after this thing, I knew that people would not be ignored since I went through Andrew. Well now I know better on that account. But anyway, right that morning I started digging on the pet thing since they are always the ones forgotten. Simply because if there is one guy to rescue ten people, there will be one guy to rescue one hundred animals. So I got disturbed and am trying to put the bad thoughts out of my head.

Remember, this is the Deep South. I'm sure the pets that survived are being well taken care of... with a nice marinade and some BBQ sauce.

techweenie 09-02-2005 11:22 AM

I read the story of the kid whose dog was taken away.

And later on the news, saw a bus. closed up ready to go, and a small fluffy white dog running to the door, barking to get aboard. I can't imagine how much that must've hurt the kid. And who the **** could let that happen?

Ed Bighi 09-02-2005 11:25 AM

I guess whoever put the kid on the bus was only following orders. And one has to follow orders, ja? It's bad enough that these folks lost everything, and now you have to take their fooking pets as well?

Every single one was left behind and I think euthanized. Their handlers are still affected by that even today. This country does some cold stuff man.

Think about this. There is probably a sex offender living in your neighborhood right now. But those dogs were deemed too dangerous to live among us after the war. Never mind how many marines swore they owed their lives to those dogs. Dog plattons did all they could to change the unfortunate result.

I don't even like dogs.. but the story bothered me when I read it... and actually seeing that little dog trying to get on the bus was too much to take.
