Weird reports from Phoenix...
I heard two separate reports today that some Katrina 'refugees' are being kept inside a building in Phoenix, and that no one is allowed to enter -- not family members; not people trying to 'adopt' a family -- no one. Supposedly the refugees are also being discouraged from stepping outside.
Anyone local able to confirm/deny? Sounds awfully conspiratorial to me. |

Phoenix....thats Area 52 isn't it?
I heard that in L.A. the "undocumented immigrants" were threatening to go out on strike if they tried shipping any refugee's out here. Any one in LA confirm this? |
Our Govenor (WA) is asking for millions from FEMA for the expected 1000 who may come to our state.
Yes, the state of Washington needs disaster relief too. |

More on the news at 11:00... Joe A |
On the plane leaving Baton Rouge yesterday I sat next to an elderly New Orleans evacuee who claimed she was kept against her will in a sanatarium outside of Baton Rouge and was not allowed to contact anyone outside for the entire week. Somehow she was either released or was able to get in touch with someone who made enough calls to get her released. She was making a connection in Memphis and then going to San Antonio where her daughter in law was going to pick her up. From there she had no idea what she was going to do. She didnt even own the clothes she was wearing. her only remaining possesion was her purse. It was such an absurd story. It would have made more sense if she had said she had escaped from the sanatarium and used a stolen credit card to book a full fare 1st class flights skipping around the country. There is no way to look at any of this or listen to any of the stories, good or bad, without seeing a complete and utter insane disaster.

Maybe we should tack on a couple zeros.... |
I say at the Refugee camps they all head over for a nice shower...to freshen them up....
|
I heard on the radio today that we aren't supposed to use the term refugee... I guess it isn't PC.
We are hearing from multiple sources that the refugees staying here at the Astrodome actually have the gall to reject donated clothing. They wait in line, and when they are handed clothes, they go through the box of their size, and turn their noses up at what's in there. Didn't anyone ever hear the phrase "beggars can't be choosers?" |
Having spent many a drunk'n time in NO and partied with less then my fair share of rascles in that town, this trajady has allowed some rather unsavory individuals to slip on by and begin anew! Kind of a weird way to do it but imagine you were in some sersious bad ***** and your life was heading down hill fast, up comes a storm of storms and washes away all that tied you to your misery. You get a fresh start and a ticket to a new beginning.
Hay, it would make for a pretty cool made for TV movie! Or at least a beach book for women of lux & leasure! |
They are all at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum here in Phoenix, and.....................Oh crap, why are there two black helicopters hovering over my house......................and why are they..............................

I just talked to a cop friend of mine that's been at the Astrodome for a couple days. He says things are very well organized and the folks there are settling down. I couldn't imagine living on a cot next a few thousand strangers, but apparently these folks are just happy to have some stability for a change.

I just wanted to let all of you "Pelican Heads" know that I am taking over as Administrator of this Bulletin Board. I'm with the Government. I'm here to help.......

I think a doc on this would be far more interesting than the pics of the distruction. What are the chances? |
The word "interment" comes to mind. The term "interment camp" comes to mind next...
|
Carnival Cruiselines offered up 2 lux liners as an alternitive - zero takers. I guess the brain trust at Carnival didn't consider that these folks have seen their share of water and really just need to hang for a awhile with out having to move.

Thats funny *****!:D

I was at the UNM Lobo football season opener against UNLV in Albuquerque this weekend. They had brough "refugees" from Katrina to the game and honored them in the pregame show.
Having watched UNM play...I asked my daughter....haven't they suffered enough? She said that displaced college students from Louisana were allowed to start classes at UNM this week without meeting entry/records reqmts, money, etc. Good on UNM...and probably lots of other schools. On a serious note, apparently the folks who were smart enough to leave when told to are also smart enough to get on with their life without sitting around and feeling sorry for themselves/blaming others. |
The current estimate is that over $100,000 worth of brand new clothes, toys, etc were delivered to Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in a 24 hour period. There was a 45 minute wait today to drop off donations which are being handled by the Salvation Army. The children are being enrolled in school immediately and a job fair has been scheduled for the adults. Many families have offered to house evacuees in their homes.

US customs has offered 10's of thousands of confiscated tommy hilfiger and other knock off clothing that has been kept in US customs warehouses... Apparently that went over big...
