Stay w/original color or something nice?
 

I'm restoring a 1964 356 Coupe for a customer. The car was originally Red with a black vinyl interior. BORING. I'm thinking that I'd like to see a nice metallic silver with a beige leather interior. Am I wrong? Do you think it would hurt the value of the car to change it?

I've seen some great red 356's. The color was BANG and I am sure it must have had 12 coats and a serious wax. Stay original. A petro blue Model T would look foolish. This is no different.

Kevin: That 356 red is a delight to the eye, in my opinion. And I'm guessing original is always better.

I've always liked the Oslo Blue and the Heron Gray on 356's. JMO

I think that silver exterior, red leather seats with oatmeal square weave carpets looks the best. I think that as long as you stay with a color combo that was available back then, you should be fine.

I'm with craigster - Heron Gray would look much better than silver.

Silver/beige sounds boring to me.

Seems like most "old" Porsches are worth more in their original color. If you are going to the trouble to do it right, and I hear tell you certainly do, might as well make it the last paintjob the car ever needs.

This is particularly true among the 356 crowd, where the virtue of originality is prized above performance or appearance.

Value wise, top would be whatever is listed on the CoA. if you are restoring for show or investment, thats the way to go. Next up is any color combo that was available for that model year. Personally, I like my dolphin grey with black interior 65 C coupe... something abotu that dolphin grey color. Finally would be any color you like.

When I have my 356 done (soon I hope...) I'm either going all orignal or going with a non-standard color. Of course, I don't care about value - I'll never sell it. I have too much history in my car (came home from the hospital in it when I was born).

Original is best.

However the most beautiful factory color combo I ever saw on a 356 was my neighbours viz., Bali Blue paint and dark red (I think it was called "Carmine Red" leather. ) A sensational look!

Modern colors on older cars just doesn't look right.

Kevin, Thanks for posting this on off topic...a break from the usual rants. Anyway, I'd say it depends on whether the owner is going the "original" look for show, or whether this car is being restored as a weekend driver. If he plans on concours, matching original is important these days. But if he plans to have fun with the car? Go with the color he likes...his money, after all.

Another vintage color could be okay (althoguh I voted for the red).

Gray/beige with Oatmeal interior woudl be elegant. With Burgundy interior, pretty cool, IMHO.

There's a 'Dolphin Gray' that looks good with a navy blue or red or burgundy interior.

If you're going for a knock-their-socks-off effect, silver with red interior is pretty hot.

Red w/ beige interior (black interior sucks IMHO).

Wayyy to many C/SC's in red in my opinion.... The cars that get "peoples choice" are never the red ones.

There's some great options already mentioned, here's my list of desireable combo's"

Silver, red, w/ oatmeal
Black, red, w/ oatmeal
Silver, green w oatmeal (looks stunning!)
Bali, red, oatmeal
Slate grey/ red or tan/oatmeal

Those are all 64/65 colors, there are a host of A and B colors that are equally as nice...Smyrna green, Aquamarine metallic (one of my favorites, and this color was done on a 65SC cab and looked great!, pic attached, note this did win a Peoples Choice).

Silver and tan is my favorite 356/911/Boxster combo.

Soterik - that car is 'wood', dam its nice! I'd lick its tailpipe just to see where it was!
