Car locator services for rare car
If you're looking for a very specific year, model, color, options etc used car, what's the best way to proceed? Assuming that very few exact matches exist in the country, how do you find them?
I suppose you can scan the various public for-sale sites but it could take months or even years before an owner decides to sell. And even then you may miss it. I've seen car locator services around the web, but never used one. Anyone have experience? How do they figure out who owns the car now? I've bought cars in the past by literally walking up to the owner in a parking lot and saying, "if you ever want to sell, call me". But the tricky part is finding the car/owner if he doesn't happen to show up in a local parking lot... ![]() |

Are you and your friends playing Gone in 60 Seconds again, Jon?
![]() What are you looking for? I have no connections, but it sounds interesting.

Well, I'm considering a 993 C4. Problem is, there were less than 1000 made; half that in model year 1995, which I'd prefer. I've been casually scanning the usual sites: Rennlist, autotrader (or whatever they call it this week), cars.com, etc, and the supply is VERY limited. If I'm going to get serious about this, there's got to be a better way...

Check with the high end dealers in big cities (LA, Miami, NYC, Atl, etc). Tell 'em what you are looking for, and what you are willing to pay. A bored sales guy may want to help you find it, so he gets the sale/comission, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions!
But, how do they do it? Is there some sort of wholesale network--like the MLS for real estate? |
