How would you read this?

"Eau is 520m – with lots of 55m. We will need a sample lot of 1m with a level 3 PPAP at kick off as this is automotive work."

This is a job I have to quote for a customer on some tubes for a German auto company. Would you read this as 520,000 / YR with releases of 55,000 pieces OR 520,000,000 pieces per year with releases of 55,000,000?

I know how I take it, but I hate that people use this symbology in my industry as both are possible. So for some Friday fun, what say you? And am I the only one this bugs?

dhoward 09-09-2005 11:31 AM

m's a thousand.

RickM 09-09-2005 11:31 AM

Where's that Bunny with the pancake on his head picture? :)

I would assume 1,000s, and also assume the guy is a pompous European snob (or that is common and global language for the particular industry)

lendaddy 09-09-2005 11:33 AM

I know that it's thousand, but I've seen it used both ways so it's a pet peeve of mine.

OK then, what would a guy that uses "m" as thousands instead of "k" use for millions?

928ram 09-09-2005 11:36 AM

If your buying, go with thousands; selling, go with millions.

I like your thinking:)

tobster1911 09-09-2005 11:41 AM

Just charge $1,500 for each unit and call it good. ;)

I think we need to socialize this plan with the rest of the department, which is different than getting buy-in, but not too unlike dialoging for feedback. OTOH, it might be better to just run it up the flagpole and see who salutes, though I'd hate to commit to that before doing a temperature check with a strawman ... but still, I don't want to innoculate the stakeholders.

When receiving a quote for $5,000,000 of a particular security the dealers would write it as 5mm since each "m" = 000's.

I did not know that, thanks a mm:)

The ideal way to read that would be nude, in a hammock. ;)

kycarguy 935 09-10-2005 05:46 PM

I use to be a buyer for a wholesale distributor and would see the same thing on some receipts and 5m would be 5 thousand and 5mm would be 5,000,000. As gooch says m represents each ,000.
