BMW madness...The beginning

Finally got some pics of the mocked up turbo kit for the 318. I have a exhaust shop making the turbo manifold. That will not be the final position of the turbo.

I know the engine is dirty. I'm gonna degrease it after I get the plumbing fabbed.

Terry, How much HP do you expect? Is the engine stock besides the turbo?

Only looking for around 180-190 hp. The turbo will only be pushing about 7-8psi. All stock internals, from what I hear these engines love to be turboed. I think the stock compression is aroound 9:1.

I added 24 lb Ford Motorsports injectors today. I hope I can get enough fuel to keep it from pinging.

Not an expert, but just wondering, why 12:1 on the FMU? Protomotive uses a 4:1 on a 911....

Also, after watching a recent video of a turbo toasting a Golf, are you at all worried about the hot side of your turbo touching off anything close to it ? I know you mentioned it's not the final resting place for the turbo, but that looks a bit busy there.

Sounds cool, should be a great hp/weight ratio. I had an e36 328, what a great car, would have been good with another 50-60hp.

The 12:1 ratio is the amount of fuel pressure increase in relation to boost. The reason I used the 12:1 is that its what has been used in the past on the M10 with 5-10 psi of boost. Did tons of research from the 2002 guys.

I have a heat sheild that covers the turbo and I will most likely relocate the coil. And will always carry a fire extinguisher.

Hi Terry

Oh, I know the ratios, I'm building a protomotive stage 1 now. My point was that 12:1 seems sort-of high... I had seen a Mustang 5.0 turbo that runs a vortech 6:1, I just thought it may overwhelm the inhjectors, or provide way too much fuel for a 4 cylinder?

It must have something to do with the high need for fuel using just 4 injectors. Take a look at the 4-cyl Honda turbos. they all use the 12:1.

You might be right with the injectors being stressed. I'm going to watch for detonation. If it happens I go up to 32 pounders.
