Hooking up phone to computer that has DSL, is it possible?
Hi, stupid computer question here. I have recently moved my home office to a room in my detached garage. I have run a DSL line out to the garage (wireless wouldn't work), and was wondering if there was a way to get phone service from the DSL line, through the computer. Sure, I have a cordless phone and a cell, but the cordless gets crappy reception in the garage (garage office is about 75-100 feet from phone base), and cell phones are iffy sometimes.
Do I need to just run a line out here, or can it be done? TIA, Jim |
If I'm thinkin' right... Just split the line, put a filter on, then go into the phone.

Unless you are on some old school 2 line setup, skipdup is right. Just put a splitter on, and put a filter on so the phone does not get static. Splitters (and long cable runs for that matter) degrade the signal, but unless you are gaming/mp3 fanatic it probably won't effect your life.

First, thanks for the responses. :)
Now, I will continue on with my computer illiteracy: I ran a DSL hard line to the garage. This is different from a phone line, as far as I can tell. Is there a splitter that will send the DSL line to the computer, and the phone line to the phone? (maybe a trip to Radio Shack?) Or do I need to actually tap into the line? BTW, I'm not into gaming (the last game I spent any time on was Asteroids), and I barely know what an MP3 player is. All I'm looking for is a decent phone line. Thanks again, Jim |
When you say different are you referring to an 8 position jack vs a 4-6 position jack? The actual cable can be the same for either application (4 pair, CAT 3 or better)...neither application requires all 4 pairs...

If you want to use your DSL for phone ( no phone bill )
there are physical phones that use free VOIP ( voice over Internet Protocol ).. Your DSL only uses 2 wires in the jack. If you are looking to just add another extension to your existing.. look here for an example of a phone that uses your dsl again, it's just one example.. I will probably be picking up one of these myself Don http://images.andale.com/f2/103/112/...O_PHONE_03.jpg |
Jim - sounds like you just pulled a RJ-45 (Cat 5) cable from your hub/router/DSL modem out to the garage - right? So, unless you want to go with something like VOIP, I would just pull a phone cable along with that Cat 5 cable.

Thanks again. The Radio Shack dude just told me the same thing as jrdavid68 did. To clarify, I did indeed pull a cat5 cable from the indoor router. Looks like I'll have to put a cable out here. Oh well.
VOIP sounds interesting, I'll have to check that out. Jim |
