Oh CRAP! Cat 5!

Looks like it may be worse than Katrina!

I thought this post was going to be about networking wiring problems.

God I'm a geek.....

How are you holding up Red?

dd74 09-21-2005 01:12 PM

You guys in TX. stay safe. This thing does look nastier than Katrina.

haha, you nerds :p

71T Targa 09-21-2005 01:20 PM

Me too...

I'm doing hurricane prep today. I'm installing the UPS's for the TV, phone and hopefully, cable and wireless network.

Next, I'm upacking the generator and firing it up for it's test run. Tomorrow I'll be putting up the plywood on strategic windows. We're in Northwest Houston and I expect we'll be OK, but they are predicting hurricane force winds even 70-80 miles inland.

The good news: Houston is much better prepared. The evacuation is occuring and appears to be orderly. And it looks like _we_ are the planned emergancy shelter for several friends. It may be a bit crowded.

Nothing nerdy about this baby:

That's going to leave a mark. :(

I was thinking, why hasn't everyone gone wireless by now?

Have like a mile of CAT 5 leftover. :(

red-beard 09-21-2005 01:43 PM

This is more like 300 miles of CAT 5.

Vipergrün 09-21-2005 01:52 PM

Fiber is the new CAT5 :)

As they say, everything is bigger in TX. Not a good thing in this case... "Houston, we have a problem"

techweenie 09-21-2005 01:54 PM

Last time I used cat 5 was wiring up a classroom for Net Day '96!

Good luck to you Texas gulf folks. All the FEMA pronouncements today sound as if Chertoff and the new FEMA guy are really on top of things.

It's gotta be pretty weird for the NO evacuees in Houston, right now... deja vu all over again

dd74 09-21-2005 01:55 PM

Traffic shot...

A whole bunch of them were on TV last night, complaining that we were only trying to get rid of them.

Funny thing, I think it's working...

One word... latency. Nothing beats the rapid response of a hardwire connection, say for gaming, or moving data. Wireless also degrades based upon your environment, copper and fiber give the same speed unless a rat chews through it!

red-beard 09-21-2005 03:38 PM

Sure, Mike. Just come out....

M.D. Holloway 09-21-2005 04:05 PM

Red, come up to Dallas. It shouldn't hit us. Should it?
