Delicate Problem: Post Colonoscopy problem (relative)
Thought I toss this to the board:
Delicate problem, because as a professional, I hate like the dickens to even think of a "certain remedy" if needed here: Parent has colonoscopy, due to what was perceived as "weight loss," by primary physician. However, specialist, before procedure documents "there was discussion about wt. loss but appears to have stabilized...", but then went ahead with the procedure anyway. Post c. problem: patient (parent) has had consistent stomach swelling following eating, very uncomfortable, also effects breathing somewhat also. Problem compounds through a 16 hour period (morning to evening) Stool sample normal, (colonoscopy report located polyp benign transverse, otherwise nothing else). Interventions: acidophillis, varied laxitatives. No effect. I already know about all the c. risks and complications. (Also, have had, and in the process of further professional opinions)

Wow! I had a colonoscopy done last year. Not fun at all, but better to know now than to find out later. I'd get a second opinion as well.
Calling Dr. Bombay!

Had some bleeding, red blood thankfully not dark coloured. I stayed awake for the proceedure and watched everything. The worst part was:
1. Drinking that crap the day before to clean out your system, yuck! 2. When the doctor was retracting the endoscope, she was hitting the compressed air into my colon. That was very painful, but tolerable. Overall, a very small price to pay for peace of mind. At least the attending doctor was hot.

MRI? (suggesting that may help visualize any prob's_
How far did they check? Flex-sig? c_914, they usually are sucking the air back out as they retract. (if it matters)

She just went up as far as the end of the transverse colon. Then as the scope was being pulled back, hitting the air to expand the colon to check for any abnormalities on the way out.
Diet changes? Oh yeah, no more excessively greasy foods, more green veggies and less red meats (just once or twice a week now). Pretty much everything in moderation. No more stuffing myself till' I'm green and bloated. I feel much, much better now.

Just curious, was it a Colonoscopy or Sigmoidoscopy?

H.G.P,
How long ago was the procedure ? Does not sound like expected side effects. Sounds like free gas in the abdomen - but I am no surgeon, even though we do a certain amount of these procedures on children.

Had it done about 18 months ago. No, no ill side effects except for blowing the best farts ever afterward. And no smells!

A colonoscopy examines the ascending, transverse and descending colon. Also the sigmoid and rectum.
In my opinion, a sigmoidoscopy is a third-rate tool for cancer screening and I'd never have one. Lots of people die from colon cancer after normal sigmoidoscopies.

My understanding is that a colonoscopy goes much deeper and one is typically under a general.
The Sigmoidoscopy is particularly fun when they retreat and double up the head by turning 180 degrees. This allows the doc to see what's going on when pulling out. It's an absolute scream. Edit: Typing while Moses was describing more accurately.

I have no idea why people just don't get the Versed while having colonoscopies. Are we still in the Stone Age?
The worst part of mine was the prep--I spent about 14 hours on the can. I went in to the endoscopy center, got doped up, and the next thing I knew I was in recovery being told to break wind. Never slept better in my life than I did that night! Seriously, get the Versed.

Moses, My daughter is an RN...one of her previous jobs was administrating the joy juice injected prior to the colonoscopy. She said it was a combo of drugs, one designed to kill the pain, the other to make you remember nothing...Any truth to this? Makes me wonder if the CIA helped develop this tool of medicine.

Yes, you will tell anyone anything. No, you will not remember a thing. It is rumored to be the favorite "truth serum" for interrogation. I don't know if the CIA uses it, but they'd be fools if they didn't.

Spent part of the afternoon with another physician (retired). Went over the colonoscopy procedure report (as stated above first post yes it was a colonoscopy...date of procedure: 6/21/05) But the specific patient complaints along with follow-ups have been going on now for about 6 weeks.) Final result 6/23/05.
His idea now is that this may be posture related due to spinal "compression" i.e. age. Patient (parent) is currently on Fosamax.

Are you saying that the symptoms started several weeks after the procedure that took place already in June ?
Then forget my previous comment. If there were that long a delay between procedure and start of symptoms I doubt there is a connection - and as stated the symptoms sounds unusual for being caused by such investigation. Not least on account of the breathing symptoms I would start fresh, wide open mind, looking for other possible causes - your friends being one of them of course. Edit: Theoretically the procedure perhaps could have created a basis for volvolous creating similar symptoms - but thats far feched. Could be anything from ventricular to pancreatic or bowel related (as well as thoracal or lumbar compression)
