Any police scanner listeners here?

I'm thinking about getting one. Any suggestions or sources for good deals? If I were to become a HAM, would those pick up the police bands?

Don't want to beat a dead horse, dude. You gotta get some action. Who you gonna talk to on that thing? Fat chicks in trucks, and even fatter guys in trucks pretending to be fat chicks in trucks. Buy a Nerf football instead.

Bryan,

Give a listen to some of the scanners on this site. Just might help you make a decision as to whether you want to get one or not.

My father lives in Detroit and listens to his every night. Of course, in Detroit, I can't really say I blame him.

Did, oh I don't know, getting an ****** life ever occur to you guys?

C'mon he's in Nebraska. You never know when a big "Crop Circle" event is gonna go down. BTW, I bought mine at Radio Shack.

Well... i'm 5 blocks from the fire dept. I figure if I've gotta hear the trucks go by anyway, it might be fun to hear what's goin' down.

A life? As if you guys have one.

I've always wanted to do that... I have some spare servos and step-motors, but never got around to it :(

I listen to a scanner at night sometimes. I use an earphone, it helps drown out my wife's snoring & helps put me to sleep. I've had my scanner about 15 years, but need a new one. The city cops just switched to the 900 frequency band & mine doesn't go that high.

I've heard some real interesting stuff, I especially enjoy car chases. Right after I got it, I was listening to it on a Saturday morning, when a truck driver stopped on the Narrows bridge, got out of his 18 wheeler, locked it up & jumped off the bridge. I listened for an hour as they tried to get the truck off the bridge & recover the body.

I will probable go to Radio Shack or use ebay for a new one. I think HAM is a bit spendy, but will pick up police, just don't accidentally key the mike.

I like to listen to shortwave stuff "hams" at www.smeter.net

as far as a scanner goes, my buddy has one he said to make sure you get a trunk tracking one so you can hear both sides of a conversation.

I heard a police call where they had to go to the local 7-11 and explain to a deranged man why throwing a donut at a lady was not a good idea. Good times. :)

With the right freq's they work very well while driving on the highway. Nice to know which milepost the radar cars are sitting at... :)

I've thought of getting one of the Bearcat mobile scanners that also look for the repeaters in police cars, and thus alert you when police cars are nearby. Seems you could figure out a way to slide these in and out of the P-car. I've been stuck on the idea of mounting a largish antenna on my 911, though.

Detroit just went digital, so all the analog scanners are useless. The digital models run about $500...
