Octane Mixing

I have a very basic question for those familiar with petroleum products. Can one mix octanes similar to mixing of oil viscosities? Given the following scenario:

87 octane @ $2.69/gal
89 octane @ $2.79/gal
93 octane @ $2.89/gal

In order to save money and achieve the higher octane while having a larger volume can I purchase one gallon of 87 octane and one gallon of 93 octane to create a octane mixture of (87+93)/2 = 90 octane which will cost ($2.69+2.89)/2 = $2.79 gallon?

This is non Porsche related so please no comments about me being cheap (which I am) - I am simply curious if the octanes can mix in this fashion.

I've read (on Pelican likely) that mixing the two actually produces slightly higher O-rating than the the average of the two.

Dont know if it's true.

Hmm, I've heard the opposite. Will have to research.......another time :)

Mixing is not linier yet not truely exponential either. I did do some actual research years ago and found that increased octane did provide better milage but it was an exact wash aainst monies saved.

Yes, octanes can be mixed. That's how they get the mid-grade stuff. Don't know that it will save you money, though.

Here's a chart for mixing race gas:
