It's better than good.
It was great. I would go so far as to say it is possibly the best sci-fi film ever made. |
Is there a difference between 'science fiction' and 'spaceship-action' ?
I watched Serenity without knowing any of the backstory last week.. It ended, and I went, "wow, that was no Solaris.." ..but I left the movie happy anyway. However, I watched "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and think that Charlie Kaufman is the re-incarnate of Phillip K Dick. -now that's scifi! Granted, I need my fill of spaceships too... And the crash of the firefly at the end..my gawd, I think they ran out of money before that shot.. it couldn't have been worse if they tied sparklers to the wings of that model. I felt like I was watching The Thunderbirds for a moment. |

It was more like Battlestar Galactica or that goofy Freddie Prince thing at that moment. My thoughts at the time were it's totaled, no way they can buff that one out.;) |
I thought it was great!

Yep, the crash at the end was rather poorly done but the movie was very good. Saw it twice and I haven't been to the theatre in about 11 months.

My wife and I went to school with Nathan.
Its nice to see that he is finally making it. Its really a group of potential 'Big Stars' that round out that show. So its nice to see that its getting good reviews...... |
I saw Serenity last week, after I finally finished watching the whole series. I felt sad that the series got axed... it was, and would have been a great show.
Serenity was a gorram good movie! I loved the little touches of humor (like Wash's 'oh God, oh God, we're all going to die?'), but wish there were a few more. It was pretty action packed, and explained a lot of things from the series that were left hanging. Might have to go see it again sometime soon. :) |
My wife and I saw it over the weekend. I really liked it, but it certainly has its problems as well. To me, Mal seemed to much of a self centered jerk to want to save the universe. There was not enough time for character development. There was so much story that they had to zip around from scene to scene to cover everything in the story Whedon wanted to tell. This would have been a whole season of one of his TV shows.
I don't watch a whole lot of TV, but I did watch Buffy, and I started watching Firefly, but got bored after a couple episodes. I will have to go rent the DVDs now. It's too bad the movie isn't doing well in the theaters. It's been out for two weekends now, and has yet to break $20 million in ticket sales. So it almost certainly is going to lose money at the box office, and unless DVD sales are real good the chances of a sequal are small. |
Ed, I've heard speculation that the movie should do well internationally, and a lot of die hards will support DVD sales. I hope it will generate enough to possibly bring a sequel (or prequel, as discussions have alluded to).
I didn't get into the show hardcore when it first aired. I remember thinking it was an interesting concept for a future/space show, but, IIRC, I did think it was a little boring. You should rent the series and watch it... you'll get a little backfill on a few things, but the movie was pretty good on it's own. |
The problem with the series was that Fox played it out of order. IE, the pilot was not shown first. The pilot, "Serenity" was actually the last episode played before it was axed. "Train Job" was aired first and didn't have the exposition to fully explain who the people were. Makes it harder to get attached when you're confused right out of the box.

I just saw this last night, I loved it. I wish it wasn't all over though :(
Like BSG, this is a crew I care about, the character development is great! I must say, whoever saw this cold without seeing the series may have troubles understanding what's going on. |
