Post "Humanity Plaza"

Did any of you guys see the Habitat for Humanity event at Rockefeller Center in NYC on NBC? It was sponsored by the Today Show and Warner Music.

What did you think?

Big publicity stunt. Their money would go a lot further if they set this thing up in a field somewhere in Louisiana and gave jobs to people displaced by the hurricane. Shipping the "homes" from Manhattan to whereever they're going must cost a lot.

Agree and its giving lots of celebs the chance to pick up a hammer and act like they are doing something. Some of them may actually be helping but why not build the houses where they are needed? Trucking them to the Gulf is just plain silly unless its an existing assy line or factory, which Rock Plaza is not.

Publicity stunt indeed. But if that brings in millions of dollars, isn't it worth it? I don't know how many "homes" were shipped from where, but frames for 45 three bedroom homes were shipped from NYC. I think about five fit in one truck..

We could get "free" or "discounted" just about anything when I spent time working with Habitat. However shipping was always the killer - no one wants to pay for shipping, and they don't give it away for free or discount it either.

Kach,

Shipping was a killer before it was $3 a gallon. Imagine what it is these days? These trucks are bulked out, not by weight so that hurts even more.

Its a good idea, but would be better 20 miles from where its needed, not NYC.

shipping on my pools were $3.75 a mile for 15-16ft wide w/2 escorts before the hurricane and fuel cost increase. I can't imagine the costs from NY to La. why not build them here where they are needed and so many people without jobs now that could help?

Guys, they were shipped in wall sections, about five houses to a truck. Standard 53' trailers, no escorts. Did you really think they were shipping completed houses?

No, but the walls were assembled and there is a lot of wasted space there. There is no way that the trucks were close to their normal max weight, and were bulked out, which cost even more money.

Self-righteous, masturbatory display intended to make the ultra-rich leftist and friends of communist tyrants everywhere feel better about their greedy self-serving hearts.
