classic imperialism
Any one else read the writeup in Wall Street News on Friday about how US involvement in Iraq is a classic example of imperialism?
Anyone have a link to it?

I bet we could sum up their entire article with seven bumper stickers.

..he said, as he timidly emerged from his parents' basement into the warm Nebraska afternoon, his bottle of Oxycontin rattling reassuringly in his pocket, next to his Magic, the Gathering cards and icosahedral dice...

No Steve, I have not. Wish I had more time for casual reading. If someone posts a link here then I'll read it. I've been using the "I" word here for eons and I don't get a positive reaction. This imperialism thing, as you know, is pretty much in a nutshell the reason America is hated by so many countries around the world. Maybe the Middle Eastern folks have a new reason or a different reason, and maybe not.
Basically, we get our foot into the door of a country, one way or another, whether they like it or not, we change things to be more to our liking, we pretend like it's a loan or a favor, and then we begin the extortion phase. We're pretty much the siole remaining big bully on this world playground, and we're acting just exactly like that in Iraq. Since we are the only remaining Superpower, I wonder if the rest of the kids on the playground are in a position to dethrone us. I think they'd like to, and I think we're vulnerable to that. Thanks, Dubya. For giving them the justification, motivation and financial opportunity to take my country down a peg. I think it's gonna happen. I think Dubya's going to go down in history as the straw that broke the camel's back.

Yep, thatks. Okay, I read it. It puts a good spin on our training of military personnel elsewhere. It assumes that training will be used for good and not for evil. It specifically sets aside Iraq because its subject is small-scale training groups. But it also does not mention our good intentions when we trained Mr. Bin Laden and his group.
I'm not anti-democracy at all. To the degree this tactic helps flegling democracies, that's great.

Small correction: Throughout the Afghan war, we provided ZERO support to Osama. Not that we didn't want to, but he would have none of it, nor did he need it, having very deep pockets himself. This is pretty well known. I suggest reading Holy War, Inc. by Peter Bergen. Pretty concise biography of Osama and his Al Qaeda career. We did, however provide funds to lots of other Mujadeen groups which ultimately became buddies with the Taliban after the Soviets left the country. I think those groups later regreted chosing the Taliban as allies.

Sounds like Kaplan is affirming the consequent there.

So our choice is (1) conservative, (2) Teddy Kozinski, or (3) NO CREDIBILITY
Nice, very nice

I ain't got no SUV. The Simplicyt Movement does sound good. My friends who have quit their jobs, paid off their mortgages and grow their own food are the happiest people I know. They're off the treadmill, and their faces just glow.
And another thing. Two. I'm not so sure liberals whine about America more than conservatives. We certainly don't love our country less. More, I'd say.

So, to summarize your position: 1) Liberals whine less than conservatives 2) Liberals love their country more than conservatives 3) You have no time to read the news because you are so busy 4) You have time to post 3,000 words on a topic you do not read about Awesome, dude.... |

Colin, your math is understandable considering your understanding of economics. I wrote under 400 words, not 3000. (BTW, a "word" is generally considered to be five characters including spaces and punctuation. But any way you count, you cannot get anywhere near 3000.)
I did not say liberals whine less than conservatives. I said I am not sure liberals whine about America more than conservatives. Yes, I think liberals love America more than conservatives. Love, that is. As opposed to emphatuation. And yes, I am fairly busy and take time to read printed material only when I am having a quick, solitary lunch which is not often. I visit here for entertainment, and it is my sole source of that. My shrink thinks my hobbies should look less like work and be more relaxing and sedentary, but I disagree. But I do appreciate your concern.
